Brigadier-General C. W. Melvill, Awarded the J36lgiaii Croix de Guerro, is a member of the New Zealand Permanent Staff. He was in an English regiment before coining to New Zealand to take up farming pursuits. For a time he was farming'at Clinton, but later took a commission in the New Zealand Forces. He was stationed «."t Auckland for some time. Captain MeJvill. as he then was, went to Englsyid shortly before the war to undergo ;i course of training at the Camberlev StaxF College. On the outbreak of war he rejoined his old regiment, and went to France, where he was sever»lv wounded. Later he went to Gallipoli, returning to France with the New Zealand forces. Brigadier-General Melnil was appointed to command the First New Zealand Brigade upon the death in action of Brigadier-General C. H. J. Brown.
| The present season has been an exI one for tomato-growers in the Hutt Valley. The crop has been a good one, and the prices realised satisfactory (says the "Post";. A peculiarity is that the principal market has been found in the up-country towns, ono grower stating that most of his tomatoes iisid gone to New Plymouth. When it was remarked that it was strange that country towns should not grow their own, it was explained that the market in the country was not large enough to encourage large growers, and that small growers were apt, through want of attention, to fail in their efforts. Then, too, tomatoes required a fairly long season, and the short drj season in Taranaki was unfavourable to their growth.
