Brigadier-General C. W. Melvill, Awarded the J36lgiaii Croix de Guerro, is a member of the New Zealand Permanent Staff. He was in an English regiment before coining to New Zealand to take up farming pursuits. For a time he was farming'at Clinton, but later took a commission in the New Zealand Forces. He was stationed «."t Auckland for some time. Captain MeJvill. as he then was, went to Englsyid shortly before the war to undergo ;i course of training at the Camberlev StaxF College. On the outbreak of war he rejoined his old regiment, and went to France, where he was sever»lv wounded. Later he went to Gallipoli, returning to France with the New Zealand forces.
