« A CHILDREN'S AFTERNOON. A children's afternoon, in aid of the Red. Cross and Lady Liverpool Funds wns hold at the residence of Mrs E. H. Henderson, West Lyttelton, on Saturday, on tho occasion of Mies Mabel Henderson's birthday. Caeh donations totalling £10 and a number of articles to forward to the Christchurch depots wcto received. Owing to tho film "Charlio Chaplin in tho Rink" not being available, another Chaplin picture, entitled "Behind tho Screen," was presented at Saturday's sessions in the Lyttelton Harbour Light picture theatre. The leading film was a Russian drama "The Angel of Mercy," starring Alice Bracly. Tomorrow "Satan Sanderson," in which Orrin Johnson plays the leading part, will be screened. BOWLING. A match for the Agar Buttons was played on tho local green last evening, and resulted in a win for the challengers, J. Garrard, J. Young, C. 11. Agar, and H. Barnard (a), who beat tho holders, C. Mazey, O. Brown, J. Miller, and D. Sinclair (s) by 23 points to 3. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Lyttelton Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester). Crs. J. H. Collins, F. G. Norton, J. T. Norton, J. R. Webb, C. E. Johnston, M. J Miller J. Gower, C. H. Agar, and T. Hcmpstaik. ' The Lighting Committee fecommended that a light be placcd on tho ramp leading to tho railway yard from Godley Quay when electric street lamps are being installed. — Adopted. A letter was received from the Manawatu County Council asking the Council to eupport the following resolution:—"That the Minister's attention bo drawn to tho fact that, through the Railway Department refusing to run special trains in connexion with race meetings, a large amount of extra motor traffic is thrown upon the roads, and that the coat of repairing the extra damage done by this motor traffic is much greater to the ; country than tho cost of running special trains to local raco meetings; further, it_ is estimated that the extra cost of repairing damage done to tEo roads in this oounty through raoes amounts to at least £1000 per annum." , Cr. Webb said the people of New Zealand wore not regarding the war seriously enough. In his opinion all race meetings should have been stopped at the outbreak of the war. While our sons wore making eacriacee, it was not right that we should allow our pleasures to continue without curtailment.
