Progress of the War.

Although tho daily cables for some timo past have recorded only minor activities on the West front, interesting details relative to the enemy's preparations for his coming blow continue to filter through. The latest addition to our knowledge of tlio German preparations is tlio statement of the United Press Association's correspondent that troops from tlio East front are still arriving, and that every effort is being made by tho Germans to conserve their ammunition and other war material. An Order to Prince Rupprecht's army group, the correspondent stales, chargo3 the leaders with wastage, the quantities of ammunition used having apparently played havoc with the linings of tho guns, an unusually high percentago of which are out of commission. There appears to have been some sharp local fighting on the Frcnch front, an enemy attack in the Verdun area having been repulsed, while a German communique admits the penetration by the French of trenches north of Badonviller, in the Lorraine sector. The Italians report a successful attack against the Austrians, considerable advantages being gained and heavy losses inflicted on the enemy. The reports relating to tlio Russian situation indicate that a deadlock has been reached in tho peacc negotiations, and both sides are now talking fight, the Russians having gon© so far as to despatch troops to the front in readiness for any attempt on the part of tho Germans to carry out their threats of an invasion of Russia.
