OUR WOUNDED IN FRANCE.

HIGfH COMMISSIONER'S VISIT.

(FRO3I our own correspondent.)

LONDON, September 21. Sir Thomas Mackenzie has returned to London from a visit of a few days to the area in which the New Zealand Division was resting, preparatory to taking part in the present push. _ Sir Thomas devoted a good deal of time to visiting various hospitals in the war' zone, where New Zealanders are being treated, with a view to ascertaining whether anything further could be' done for their comfort.

He found that in the hospitals in IVance, as in those in this country, the New Zealand wounded were receiving tho most skilful attention and the greatest personal kindness, leaving no cause for uneasiness on this score. It has not been possible yet to arrange for representation of New Zealand through the Red Cross on the lines of which Canada and Australia are represented in the area. Tho Australian Red Cross does, as a matter of fact, look after New Zealand soldiers in ccrtain smail ways in common with their own, but Sir Thomas Mackenzie feels that if is possible for New Zealand to do herself anything that- might be required she should endeavour to do it. Eor one thing, he thinks that it would he an advantage if-there could be some New Zealand lady visitors among the hospitals in the war zone. At present practically "the whole of this work is being done by Mrs Northcote (daughter of Archdeacon Thorpe, of Christchurch), whose husband is chaplain at Boulogne. For some months past the TVar Contingent Association has been endeavouring, in consultation with General Ri - ardson, to obtain permission to tran fer some of their activities to Ir > owing to the increased number of who are now retained m l'f hospitals. It is understood that representations will bo made subject.
