THE LATE MRS J. T. MATSON.

THE FUNERAL. The respect and esteem in which the late Mrs John T. Matson was held was exemplified by tho very large number of friends of tho deceased who attended the funeral which took place yestorday afternoon, leaving the residence of her daughter, Mrs S. K. Garrick, "springfield," Murray place, St. Aibans, for the Papanui Cemetery. As one ot tne oldest residents or Christchurch, the late Mr 3 Matson was respected ana loved by a very wide circle of friends, and was well known for her kindly and generous disposition. Though in her day it was not usual for women to take such an active part in public life as is common now, yet Mrs Matson was always ready to help and assist any deserving cause. Thore are many instances of her philanthropy to be recalled, and in no case did a deserving appeal meet with other than a generous response. The late Mrs Matson was a fine type of the pioneer women of Canterbury, and brought up a large family, who are among the best known and 'most highly-respected citizens of Christchurch to-day. A vory large number of beautiful wreaths were sent as a last token of estoem to the deceased, the names of tho senders being as follows: —Mrs Duncan Rutherford, Mrs Robert Allan, Mrs D. The gathering about the graveside was a very large one, many having come direct to the .cemetery. The coffin was carried from tbe house to ,h° hearse and from the church to the graveside by Messrs H. Matson, D. Matson, and L. Matson, sons of the deceased, S. K. Garrick, W. Watson, Geo Fisher, sons-in-law of the deceased, and Keith Matson, a grandson, who all acted as the pall-bearers.
