Senator Elihu Root created an enormous sensation in a speech condemning the leniency shown to pro-Ger-mans in the "United States. "Pro-German traitors," he said, "in and out of Congress are endeavouring to make America's preparations so effective that our manhood will meet
defeat in firing line. They arc covering themselves with a cloak of pretended Americanism. If we art; competent and fit for our liberty we will find them out and_ get at them. There are men in New Yoik who ought to be shot to-morrow at sunrise tor treason. There are also some Xew York editors deserving execution for treason, and sooner or later they will get it.''
