A Press Association message from Wellington states that at the Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr Reid, S.M., lined the Union Stoain Ship Company £30 and costs for employing a reservist who was not enrolled. The patriotic entertainment which the Navy League had arranged to take place at Sheffield on July 27th last, and which had to be postponed because of bad weather, will take place on Friday next, 24th instant. Exchanges of pulpits among ministers of different denominations, which a short time ago were raro, are now quite common. To-morrow, Christchurch will witness a manifestation of this growing unity. Almost every nonepiscopal pulpit of the city and suburbs will be occupied for the evening service by a minister of another denomination. At annual meeting of tho Canterbury Sheepowners' Union yesterday, Col. R. A. Chaffey stated that there was ample boy labour for shearing and harvesting from tho boys of the secondary schools. He believed, that no loss than 750 would be available from the Waitaki Boys' High School, Christ's College, and tho High School, Christchurch. The quality of the lads was good, and he knew that last season they had done excellent work and been of tho greatest possible value. Mr B. Seth-Smitli and Mr W. H. Parkinson endorsed these remarks as to the splendid way in which the boys worked. Mr H. M. Smeeton, Y.M.C.A. Commissioner from England and France, arrives in Christchurch to-day from Wellington, and proceeds to Ashburton, where he will address a public meeting in tho Reserve, returning by the express this afternoon. He will be the guest at a business men's tea to be held in the Y.M.C.A. this evening, and subsequently will speak at the patriotic concert in the Opera House. Mr Smeeton is the principal of tho wellknown Auckland hnn of Smeeton's, Ltd., and went to England and France as Y.M.C.A. Commissioner to look after the interests of New Zealand soldiers entirely at his own expense. He has consented to devoto a little time to a tour of the South Island for tho purpose of telling the people at first hand what the Y.M.C.A. is doing for our boys at Homo and at the front. Mr Smeeton will give an address in the Durham street Methodist Church at to-morrow morning's service, and will speak at a public meeting in the Y.M.C.A. ill tho afternoon at 4.15 p.m. Tho following is a cony of a telegram sent by Sir James Allen to tho chairman of the University Colleges in tho Dominion: —"The committee under Lord Selborne have formulated a echo mo to make available for suitablo applicants from among oversea soldiers and sailors who have served the Empire, the academic, scientific commercial, and industrial educational facilities of the United Kingdom, and have ascertained . that universities and technical schools will welcome such men, and provide for one-year courses of study, specially designed for all needs. Tho committee has sufficient funds available to commence, and the New Zealand Government -has been asked to nominate one disabled New Zealand soldier for tho course at the University, beginning soon. Will you please suggest for consideration the name of a New Zealand disabled soldier whose studies were interrupted by the war. to enable the nomination to be acted'on without delay. It will bo well to suggest a disabled man who is now in England or Franco.'i

Replying to Mr McCombs in tho Houso of Representatives yesterday, the Primo Minister said ho was not prepared to say that tho time had como when we must conscript labour, but tho time might come when Pai'liament would havo to puss legislation to discourage idleness. In the- published prize list for tlio Canterbury Kennel Oiub's Show, Col. the Hon. R. Hcaton Rhodes was placed second and third in a class for pointers with his dogs Nidra and Ruby.
