(By Cible—Preas Association—CopyTifht.) (Received June 27th. 11.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 27. Mr Charles W. Marter, for several years sub-editor of the "Sydney Daily Telegraph,'' died to-day.
Mr Martor, who was about o2 years of age, was widely known aud extremely popular, in journalistic and athletic circles throughout New Zealand and Australia. He wasanat-ivc of New Zealand, and on leaving school joined the theatrical profession. Ho took up pres.* work as a member of the "'New Zealand Times" reporting staff, Wellington, and was for many years a valued member of that staff, and occupied the sub-editorial chair before he left, about fifteen years ago, to take up a position on the literary staff of tho "Sydney Daily Telegraph." He was for some time dramatic critic- of that journal, and about Peven years ago accepted the position of sub-editor, which he held with distinct credit to himself and the paper until three or lour weeks ago, when he was laid aside by illness. Mr Marter was one of the most capablc journalists in Australasia, possessing a versatile and forceful style. l/'nder the pen-name of "Arawa," his special contributions to the "Telegraph," especially on football and other topics particularly dealing with his native Maoriland, were widely quoted and reprinted. During his residence m Wellington, Mr Marter took a live interest in all branches of athletics, and at one time was secretary of tho Wellington Ilugby Union, anil of the New Zealand Amateur Ilowing Association. Mr -Marter was twice married. lirst* wife ttfas a sister of Mr H. P. Wyatt, Superintendent of the Christchurch Telegraph Office. His eldest- son, who was a member of tho Australian Imperial Forces, took part in tho historic landing at Gallipoli, and was severely wounded early in the campaign.
