THE ROYAL ACADEMY.

(rr.oM- on: ovr.v corbhspondent.) LONDON, May 18. Tho Zcalanders who arc exhibiting in this year's Royal Academy arc Mr G. J".. Butler and Mr O. Birloy ((Jhristchurch). Mr Birloy is represented hy another portrait—that of Major Simon Dale. Mr Butler has » war picture, "The Supreme Sacrifice'' (211), showing a number of wonndod Spahis in a damaged French, church — a common enough theme in this year's Academy. Amongst the portraits, that of the Countess of Hardwicke, by Mr R. C. Eves, occupies a prominent position in ?»o. 3 gallery. As usual during rocont years, the olaros of honour haro been allotted rather to the subject matter of the paintings than to tho work itself, and tho result is distinctly disappointing. The premier place in the exhibition is given to Mr F. O. Salisbury's picture in commi noration of "Boy Cornwell, V.C." The most that can be said for ifc is that it is a very large picturo, and was painted by order of the Admiralty, on board H.M.S. Chester. Mr Albert H. Hodge shows, in tho sculpture section, a full-length figure of the 3a to Captain Soott—the face a speaking likeness —in full Antarctic garb. It is to form part of a monument which i» to be erected to the memory of Captain Soott and his companions who lost their lives in the expedition.
