Cable Aesooiaiionj LONDON, June 25. Brigadier-General J. E- B. Seoly, M.P., D.S.O. (formerly Secretary of Stat© for War), has beon accidentally ■Rounded in France. Brigadier-General Seely, as Colonel Seely, was Secretary of State for War 1912-14. He served throughout tho South African war, winning tho D.S.O. and high praise. On the outbreak of the present war he deserted politics for the field of battle, and, by reason of his high services, has been mentioned in despatches and awarded the honour of G.B.

THE FALLEN AND WOUNDED. PERSONAL NOTES. Private A. D. Reese (killed in action) was a son of the late Mr D. Reose, M.P., and a brother Gf tho well-known Canterbury and New Zealand cricketers, Dan and T. W. iteese. Private Reosc, who "was 30 years of age, "was educated at the West Christchurch School and Christchurch Boys' High School, and played for the latter's first eleven in 1901. After leaving school lie "was for some years with Mossre Bing, Harris and Co., afterwards spending some time with Messrs Coulls, Culling. of Wellington, and eventually returning to Christchurcn, where ho entered the School of Art, and studied architecture. He was for some years in tho office of Mr L. S. Woods, and eventually set up with a partner undor the iirm-namo of Reese and Woods. He was a prominent member of St. Paul's Church and Bible Class, and a valuable member of tho West Chrustchurch Cricket Club, being captain of tho latter club's President's Eleven. Ho originally went into camp -with the 9th Reinforcements, but an oporation for appendicitis threw him back until tho 18ths, with -whom he proceeded to England. Bad health still followed him, and an attack of influenza saw him relegated to tho 19ths, with whom he went to 1' ranee. Gastritis, however, laid him low in France, and as far as is known he had not beon into tho trenches up till tho middle of May last. However, ho must havo got there eventually, and incidentally spent but a short time there, as he was killed in action on Juno 14th. The late Private Reeso was well known in Christchurch, and was a popular member of a very popular family.

Advice was received in W ollington yesterday by Mr J. Crombio that his brother. Corporal Fred W. Crornbie, previously reported wounded on Juno 7th, was killed in action. Ho was a son of the late Mr C. M. Crombie, Commissioner of Taxes, and at tho time of his enlistment ho was employed on the commercial staff of the ''Evening Post." He was born in Wellington 34 voars ago, and received his education at St. Patrick's College. Before ho joined tho "Post" ho was in the Advances to Settlers' Office. He was a man of genial character, and this won him popularity on all sides. His activities extended in various directions, and ho was well known as secretary of the Wellington Tennis Club. He was a tennis enthusiast, and a popular player at club tournaments. Corporal Crombio left New Zealand as a sergeant-major with the Bth Reinforcements in November. 1910,, and after being stationed in Egypt for some time ho was in April, 1910, transferred to Sling Camp, whero ho did notable work as a musketry instructor. Ho. went to France in March last.

Private advico lias been rcccivcd in Xlakaia of the death ill action of Private Jack Sclby Street, fourth son of Mr Walter Sti'cct. of Rakaia. Private (Street was liom at Rakaia twonty-one years ngo, and was educated a.t the Rakaia School. Beforo enlistment ho was engaged in farming pursuit-s, and "was for a considerable timo with Mr Geo. Ross, of Oarew, and with Mr Geo. Watson, of Kyle. He was a very popular young man, with plenty of life. He enlisted -with the 11th Reinforcements, but being under twenty years of ago ho •was deferred to the loth Reinforcements. He spent only about a week in England, and had been in France about a year when ho met his death. In letters received by Mr Street by the last mail, Privato Street mentions having just met his oldest brother, Corporal Willie Street, of the Military Police in France. This brother enlisted with the 2nd Reinforcements, and suffered from enteric on Gallipoli. Another brother, Geoffrey, went with the 11th Reinforcements:, and was wounded in the thigh in tho Sommc fighting in September.

Private Herbert Digbv Wyatt (killed) was a son of Mr H. J. Wyatt, of Seatoun, Wellington, and a nephew of Mr H. I*. Wyatt, Superintendent of the ChristcliuVch Telegraph Office. He went away with tho 13th Reinforcements. He was not quite twenty-one years of age, and tried to enlist in 1914, when he was not yet nineteen years old, but was rejected on account of his age. He then waitod until tho day after his nineteenth birthday, when he was ablo to tell the authorities that he was in his twentieth year. He saw service in Gallipoli, Egypt, and Flanders. Privato Wyatt was horn in Wellington, and after two years at Wellington College, he joined "the staff of Reckitt's Overseas, Ltd., in Wellington.

Private advico has boen received in Wellington of tho death from wounds of Private Paul Freyherg, a member of Vhe well-known fighting family, and a brother of Brigadier-General B. C. Freyberg, V-tJ. (says a Press Association message"). Private Paul Freyberg was thirty-three years old. and is the second of tHe family to lay down his life, the eldest brother, Oscar, falling on Gallipoli. Paul was educated at Wellington College, and afterwards studied for thd law in the office of Findlay and Dalziell. He then joined the city solicitors' staff, whence he enlisted in the 12tli Reinforcements. . Though only a youth at the time, he 6aw service in the Boor War. In private life Private Freyberg was an enthusiastic and daring yachtsman. He was a frequent contributor to the "New Zealand Yachtsman," his articles under the pen name of "Boat 'Arbour Bill" being much looked for.

Lance-Corporal John Robert Drake (killed) was born at Ravensbourne, Dunedin, thirty years ago. He went with tho Main Body to Egypt, took part in the lighting at Suez in the early stages cf the war, and then went to Gallipoli, taking part in the initial landing, and all the heavy fighting which followed. He subsequently went to Franco with the New Zealand troops, taking part in the battle of the Sommc anc' other engagements, and fell at the taking of Messines. A brother Privato Benjamin Drake, enlisted with the 6th Reinforcements, and was wounded at Gallipoli. He was then sent to England, and after boing in hospital there for some time was sent to Franco. A third brother, Private James Gibson Drake, enlisted with the 29th. Rein-

forcements. and is- at present in Duncdin on sick leave.

Sergeant Hugh D. Jeffreys, who has been severely wounded in" tho foot, probably necessitating amputation, is a son of Mr F. J. Jeffreys, of Nelson. He joined the 4th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and has seen somo of tho severest lighting in France. Ho is an old boy of Nelson College. His brother, Bernard, who went away with tho Main Body, was recently granted a commission in tho artillery.

Miss J. Fraser, of High street, Rftngiora, has received word that her brother, Private A. D. Eraser, who left with tho 13th Reinforcements, has been wounded.

Mrs V. Hunt, of 121 Fitzgerald street, St. Albans, has received word that her son, Leslie Libeau Hunt, was killed. in action on Juno 7th. Private Hunt was in his nineteenth year, and was the youngest of four brothers at tho front. Ho was the eighteenth son of tho late Mr Stephen Hunt, of French Farm. Mrs Hunt removed from French Farm to St. Albans, and Private Hunt was educated at the St. Albans School and Technical College, later being employed by Messrs Ballantyne and Co., and Taylor and Oakley. He was a prominent member of the St. Albans Hockey Club and Young Men's Guild. He left with the 16th Reinforcements, and haa only been in France a few wooks before he was killed, as he had been in hospital after reaching Home. Mrs Hunt has three ether sons at the front, viz., Wilfred, Oliver, and Lucien. The lato Private Hunt was tho second youngest son in a family of twenty-eight, twenty-seven being" born at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. The late Mr Stephen Hunt was married twice, there _l>eing thirteen children in the first family, and 1»> in tho second, the latter being _ grandchildren of one of the remaining old French pioneer settlers. Mr J. L. Libeau, of Duvauchelles Bay. It scorns that the link with France is not vet broken when the French settlers' descendants die on French soil fighting for Franco and her Allies.

James Thomas Riddle (killed iu action) was the only son of Mr and Mrs Jae. Riddle, 33 'Ollivier's road. Linwood. He was born at I) lined in -1 years .igo, ;md educated at iairbe. Prior to enlisting ho was employed by Messrs Barlow Bros.

Mrs A. Riissoll, of Leithfield,_ has received advico that her son, Private James Russell, has been admitted _ to Walton-on-TJiamcs Hospital, suffering from shrapnel wounds in both arms. He enlisted from Fiji, and left with, the 19th Reinforcements. Prior to enlistment he was employed by the Fijian Government for seven years. Ho has two brothers at the front.

' Private J. Gibson ('-"Wallie") Hughes (wounded) is the fourth son of Mr and Mrs T. R. Hughes, formerly of Christchurch, and now of 2sew Plymouth. Private Hughes, who is attached to tho Field Ambulance Corps, was in the employ of the Farmers' Co-op Association at the time he enlisted. At latest advice he was remaining with his unit.

private AY. (killed) wao the only son of Mr "Win. Knuckev, of Wanganui. Ho left with the 9th Reinforcements, and after undergoing a period of training in Egypt, proceeded with tho Nc w - Zealand Division to France. Ho was wounded ,in the chest on September 17th, during the great Sommo battle, and rejoined his unit on January 9th last. Recently his narents had the pleasure of learning that he had been recommended for a commission. Ho was between 21 and 2'2 years of age, and an old boy or tno Victoria Avenue and Collegiate .Schools, Wannamii.

private H. E. Hart (died ofwound6) was a brother of Mrs E. Caselberg, of Masterton, and was 39 years of ago. He. enlisted anu. left with the -ilst Reinforcements, being only a few davs in Franco when ho received the wounds which caused his death. _ Deceased also served in tho South African campaign. Tho late Sergeant Hart, previous to enlisting, was manager of the Uhiatua branch of tho W.F.C.A., and loaves a' widow and a daughter.

Mr J. L. D'Arey-Irvinc, Government Survevor, now in Grcymouth, has been advised that his second son, Corporal R G. D'Arcy-lrvinc, was buried by shell explosion, but escapcd wounded. This is tho second occasion on which ho has been wounded. Corporal D'Arcv-Irvine enlisted with tho Alain Body/ and had been through all the principal fights with tho New Zealand troops, including the famous landing at Galhpoli. .

Private Francis Ryan (killed) was tho eldest son of Mr William Ryan, Superintendent of the Greymouth 1* iro Brigade. He left with the 11th Reinforcements. Ho a'as a native of Greymouth, 21 years of age, and was educated at tho Marist -Brothers' School.

Lancc-Corporal John_ McCausland Hamilton (wounded seriously), is 36 years of age, and a son oi: Mrs A. Hamilton, of Bluff. He is an old boy of tho Southland Boys' High School. At the time of his enlistment in tho ]Bth Reinforcements he was Public Trust Audit Inspector for the South Island. Lancc-Corporal Hamilton was a splendid athlete, and some years ago captained the Oriental (Wellington) senior Rugby team. Ho also represented Wellington at the game. The Star (Wellington) Rowing Club had in him a good oarsman. He was also a splendid' billiardist, and captured the clubs' championship of tho Empire city.

Private John Steel (killed) was . a son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Steel, of Blaketown, Greymouth. He was 41 years of age, and left with the 13th Reinforcements. He was well-known throughout the West Coast. He leaves behind an aged mother and father, sis brothers, and five sisters.

Sergeant-Major Percy G. Tizard (wounded) left with the second South Canterbury portion of the 6th Reinforcements, and has seen service on Gallipoli and in Francc. Ho is a native of Cromwell, and the youngest son of tho late 'Mr W. W. Tizard, brewer, and a grandson of Mr John Marsh, ono of the pioneers of Cromwell.

Corporal James Andrews (killed) wa» a well-known Grey mouth resident. He was a prominent competitor at the Musical Competition Festivals in Greymouth. He made a special hobby of boxing, and was once chosen to represent the West Coast at the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Championships, but had the bad luck to be laid out by a bout of influenza on the eve of the contest. He was at one time secretary of the West Coast Boxing Association, and acted as referee at several competitions in and around Greymouth. He was always physically fit, and this fact ho emphasised by winning the lightweight boxing channnonship of the transport on which tie went ;to England. A member of the Church of England Men's Society, he showed in his actions (says the "Grey River Argus") that a good Christian life was not in any way incompatible with good, clean, manly sport. One of his brothers was wounded recently in France, and two others aro on "their way to the front.

On Sundav afternoon, at All Saints' Church. Prebblcton, there was held a memorial sery.iVo to the lato Private Leslie Gabbatis. who died of wounds on Jiitic 10th. There was a largo congregation, and after the special form of service, Private Gabbatis's favourite Tiymn ("The Sower Went Forth Sowing") was sung. For many years Private Gabbatis had been an active Church worker, and his loss is felt keenly by Church people.

Second-Lieutenant William Raymond McCormick (killed in action) was 22 years of age, and the only son of Mr W. J. McCormick. "Elston," To Aroha, North Island. After finishing his education at the Grammar School, Auckland, he was sent to Lincoln College for

a three years' course in agriculture.! Upon gaining his certificate of competency, ho returned homo to assist liis father in the management of his estate. Much sympathy is felt in Ellcsmere for his bereaved parents and only sister, where the family aro well known. He tviis a nephew of Miss Cryer, of "Watcirford," Southbridge, and Mr Dunlop McCormick, Mouth of Rakaia. and cousin of Mr John McCormick, Lyttclton.

Private Oily Baxter (killed in action) was born and educated at Southbridge. and at the time of enlisting in tho 18th Reinforcements lie Jived at Ituapuna. When the estato of the late Mr George Baxter, his father, was administered, Private Baxter and his two brothers bought the farm at Ruapuna, known as "Jessiefield." and eighteen months ago they bought another large farm called "Peel View." Towards tho close of last year the brothers sold "Jessiefield" and went to the front. Private Oily Baxter, who was 24 years of age, was a lad possessing grit and determination. Ho was formerly a member of the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles, and was a splendid horseman. Ho enjoyed much popularity and was greatly esteemed.

Private George Taiaroa (killed in action) left with the 16th Reinforcements just a year ago. Ho was the second son of the late Mr George Taiaroa, and grandson of Mrs Taiaroa, of Taumutu, and of the late Hon. H. K. Taiaroa. M.L.C. Ho was brought up at Taumutu by his grandmother, with whom he had lived all his life, receiving his education at the Sedgemere School. Private Taiaroa, who was only twenty vears of age. was a very popular young Tellow.

Private Robert Harney (killed in notion) was tho fourth son of Mr I?. Harvey, a well-known Southbridge farmer. Ho was bora at Southbridge and educated at tho District High School, and had been on active service since the early days of thp war. For a number of years he played football for the Southbridge Club.

News has been received in the Ellesmerc district of tho death from sickness, at the Walton-on-Thames Hospital, of Gunticr Ralph R. Coc, son ot Sirs Coe, of Repton street, Merivale, and -of the late Mr John Coe, of "Bruoecoe.'! Irwell. Gunner Coc left for the front in the very early days of the -war, and spent some time in Egypt, where ho was overtaken by illness. On recovering he was sent to France, where he saw active service, but sickness again laid him low, and he was obliged to go to England, where he was ill for some considerable time prior to his death. Gunner Coo was a well-known representative footballer, and was fbr a number of years regarded as one of the best players in the Ellesmerc district, his place being in the five-eighths lino. He was very well known in North Canterbury, particularly on the Peninsula and in Ellcsmere, and enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him. Gunner Coe was a brother of Mr L. B. Coe and Mrs T. A. Stephens, and uncle of Captain John Coe (late of Anzac).

Privato George H. Cross (killed) was tho eldest son of Mr John Cross, of Ellosmere. He was educated at the Ellcsmere School, and was in his 24tb year. Since, leaving school ho ha<J been engaged in farming; and was on a farm at Weedons at the time of enlisting with, the loth Reinforcements. His younger brother, Herbert, . who loft with the same reinforcement, was wounded severely on tho same day as liis brother met his death.

Private G. L. Marshall, who loft with the Bth Reinforcements, and Ins youngest brother, Hector, who left with tho 17th Reinforcements, have both been wounded. They are sons of Mr A. T. Marshall, of Springston, and both were educated at tho Springston School. Hector, who was only in his 18th year at the time of leaving, tried very hard to get away oarly in tho war, but was prevented on account of his youth by his parents, but, seeing his determination, they relented on his enlisting a sccond time.

Private Lester Blay (woundod) is tlio second son of Mr T. Blay, c f Ellesmcre. He was educated at tho Ellcsmere School, and followed farming pursuits until enlisting -with tho 14th Reinforcements.
