THE NEW ZEALANDERS ON THE SOMME.

l-lIGH PRAISE FROM BRITISH STAFF OFFICER.

A young New Zealand officer in a British regiment, who has been attending lectures in England for coropauy commanding, writing to his father, a well-known Christchurch resident, says:

"We have had some very interesting lectures during the week—ono very fine one 011 the Soninie battle, wh<?n the lecturer, a General Headquarters man, said that the New Zealand Division on the Somme held a record for this war. Three times they had a task allotted to them, and on oaeh occasion— in every ease—the whole division took their objective, i.e., took all they attacked. So other division have done this in the war. Usually one regiment or two fail in their attack, but it wasn't so with the New Zealanders. Ho (the lecturer) was full of praise, and lie knew what he was talking about, as lie was a lieut.-colonel on the- General Headquarters Staff of our Army."

The great value of the comments made by the lccturer lies in the fact that they were not made by a New Zealander, and they were not made to New Zealanders.
