TORRENTIAL RAIN.
OVER SIX INCHES IN TWO DAYS.
DAMAGE IN AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, December 22
The torrential rainfall which was responsible for the slip on tho Main Trunk line ceased to-doy, tbe total rfgistered during the past two days being 6.22 in. Minor damage has been done in tho city and suburbs, whilo in the country low-lying areas have been flooded.
The flood waters of the Waimuku district nearly proved a death-trap for three men—C. Miller, A. Humphreys, and J. Fletcher, of Auckland. Last evening, when returning to the city in a spring cart, after successfully negotiating several flooded portions of the road, they drove into* a dip in tho road, which was covered with water to a depth of 12ft. The horses were drowned, |md the man were «rwept out of the cart into the water, where, after some struggling, they succeeded in grasping the tops of some titree, and in that position they were rescued as a result of their cries for help by two residents of the district.
