THE FIRST BALLOT. DISAPPOINTING MEDICAL. RESULTS. With the exception of the numerouß men appealing and 30 others, the whole of the men in the Christchurcji group area drawn in the first ballot iavo now been medically examined. The first examination was held last Wednesday, when 62 men faced the Medical Board, and the second "was held on Saturday, when 65 attended. As stated in Saturday's "Press," the first examination results wero very disappointing, only 14 men being passed as fit for active service, and 2 as fit after undergoing specified treatment. On Saturday 28 men wero passed as fit for active service, and one as fit after -undergoing treatment. Of the remaining 36 men, five were declared fit for home service, and 31 rejected as permanently unfit either for active or home service. _ The net result is that the proportion of fit has jumped roughly from 25 per cent, of the whole to 33J. The total of permanently unfit was more than half of the whole number of men examined. Probably the cause of this disappointing result is that tlio majority of the men who did not appeal wero men who had previously voluntarily enlisted, and been rejected as medically unfit. The probability is that a far higher proportion of fit men will be secured from the men appealing whoso appeals are disallowed, and from the 30 men not appealing who have not yet attended tho medical examination. If a higher proportion of fit men is not obtained, the possibility ie that the first ballot taken will be insufficient to fill the'Christchurch quota of tho 24th Reinforcements which mobilise during the first week of January. The following figures show the result of the two medical examinations in tabular form: — Class lstd3y. 2nd day. Tl. Fit for active service 11 28 42 Temporarily unfit for active eervioo "2 1 3 Fit for home aervioo S 5 .1:1 Permanently unfit .. H8 31 03 Totals -• -- 62 65 127 THE WELLINGTON FIGURES. The medical examination of Wellington men called up for service with the Expeditionary Force was concluded by the Military Service Medical Board on Friday. During the three diiys 124 men presented themselves. Of these (51 men were passed as fit, o() were turned down as unfit, and 13 were pronounced as temporarily unfit. Sixtythree men failed to report. Immediate steps are being taken to ascertain why these mc-n did not- put in an appearance when instructed to do so.
