NO VOLUNTEERS.
For the first time in its history no rocruits registered at the Christchurch lieeruiting Office yesterday. Ever since the first ballot was taken, onlv a handful of volunteers Lave come along, and to all intents and purposes it looks as if volunteering is a spent force, men preferring to take their chances in the ballot. APPEAL BOARD QUESTIONS. CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. (tress association telegram.) WELLINGTON, December 15. A conference which, was held to-night between the Defence Minister and the chairmen of the Military Service Boards and military representatives appointed to deal with appeals, discussed at length the question of meeting liabilities of soldiers and reservists called up by ballot, and also considered, with a view to reaching uniformity of action. the question of what constitiites "undue hardship" and other points which have arisen in the course of recent appeals. The Minister stated that while no resolutions had been adopted, tho discussion would prove useful far the guidance of the Boards in their work.
