OBITUARY.

MR JOHN LOGAN,

Mr John Logan, one of tlie oldest residents of the district, died at Belfield on Saturday last. Born at Paisley, Scotland, ho left the Old Land sixty-eight years ago. and after visiting Bombay settled down in Australia, and worked for ten years on the Bendigo and Ballarat gold diggings. He then left for New Zealand, and shortly after arrival at Lyttelton took np a farm at Rangiora. He joined in the rush to Gabriel's Gully, and after his return to Rangiora sold his farm and purchased another at Rangitata Island, where he resided for six years. In 1880, ho went to Belfield, and lived there till his death. His wife predeceased him by 36 years. He has left a family of eight sons and one daughter, the sons being Messrs James Logan (Central Otago), John Logan (Wanganui), Thomas Logan (Belfield), Robert Logan (Oamaru), Alexander Logan (Bay of Plenty). William Logan (Lake Coleridge), David Logan (Sydney), and Joseph Logan (Invercargiil), and the daughter, Mrs C. Skinner, of Otaki. The deceased was highly esteemed throughout the district, and a large number of residents paid a last mark of respect to his memory by joining in the funeral procession. The death is announced of Mrs Clarke, of Walters road, Mt. Albert, wife of Mr H. G. Clarke, of Auckland. •*lrs Clarke, who had also lived for many years in Christchurch, was a daughter of the late Mr Thomas Atkins, one of the oldest residents of Motueka. Nelson. Mrs Clarke leaves a family of daughters and six sons, nearlv all of whom are married. The youngest boy is on active service in France. The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday of an old native of Wellington, Mr Joseph Ralph Renner, fourth eon of the late Captain F. W. S. R-en- ; ner, a well-known skipper on the coast in the early days of the Dominion, at of 59. He was at one time a prominent figure in cricketing and literary circles. He leaves a widow but no family. Surviving brothers are:— Messrs George Eenner, Kaikoura; W. H. Renner, Gisborne: John Renner, San Francisco; and R.'C. Renner, of Wellington. «
