A wireless message from Berlm states that the Portuguese Minister of Marino announces that German submarines attacked Funchal, and sank in the Madeira Islands the auxiliary vessel Kangaroo, the English steamer Dacia, and the French gunboat Surprise. They then bombarded tho town for two hours from a distance of two miles. The. coastal batteries forcc-d the. submarines to withdraw. Tho eommaudcr and thirty-lour of the crew of tho Surprise perished, also a few Portuguese who ■were aboard the Kangaroo and the Dacia. MEDALS FOIt JUTLAND. (Ilcccivcd December Sth, 12.20 a.m.) LONDON, December 7. The New Zealand War Contingent Association is striking a medal as a Christmas present for the officers and men of the battle-cruiser New Zealand in commemoration of tho Jutland Battle. A MYSTERY. SURVIVORS OF THE MOERAKI. (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) LONDON, December G. Eight- perished in the Moeraki. There were ninety-four survivors, including the captain. AN AMERICAN CASE.
