James Allen (Minister of Defence) to-day, "has received a telegram from General Richardson -with reference to the casualty lists. He advises that the public should be informed with regard to these lists .that only the information forwarded to the Government is official, and that information from unofficial sourccs cannot be relied upon." THE FALLEN AND WOUNDED. PERSONAL NOTES. Private J- C. Low, who was wounded on the 25th September, has, according to_ advice received by his mother, Mrs AY. Low, Mosgicl, now rejoined his regiment—the Wellington Infantry Battalion. Before joining the Bth Reinforcement Private Low was employed in the Government Life Insurance in Wellington, and was a prominent member of tho Karori Rifle Club, being club champion for the season 19i2-1913. His. brother Allan, who was severely wounded early in July at Pozieres, is still in hospital at Lymington, England. 3fr J. Harrison, of Webb street, 3lerivalc, has received advice that his fourth son, Private Gerald Harrison, has been wounded. Private Harrison was tho third brother of this familj' to volunteer, enlisting in the Oth Reinforcements, and he saw a brief period of service on Gallipoli Peninsula before goipg to France. He fought through the big advance on the Somme without suffering injury. Private Harrison is twenty-one years of age. He was born in Christchurch, and was educated at Christ's College. When he enlisted he was employed with the New Zealand Re.frigeratinc Co. He was an enthusiastic- cricketer, being a member of the St. Allans District Club. Tho Rev. J. W. Griffin, of Temuka, has received advice that his son George, who was seriously wounded in September, is now improving. '' Capt. E. T. Chapman, of Temuka, has been advised by the Base Records Office, Wellington, that his son, H. J. L." Chapman, who was wounded in the '"'big push,'' is in the Xew Zealand Hospital at Brockcnhurst, and is improving. Mr Edward Williams, of Temuka, has been advised that his son George has. been admitted to the Xew Zealand General Hospital, Bro"kenhurst, suffering slightly from debility. Sergt. J. A. Macl(K)d, of the 12th Reinforcements. who is reported severely wounded and in hospital in London, is a son of tho late 3lr Donald 31 aci cod, -- of Palmcrston South. When he enlisted he was branch inspector in Xew Zealand for the B.ink of Australasia, and prior to that had been manager of the Bank's branches at Tauranga. Te Puke, Rotorua, and Hawera- His youngest brother was killed in action at Gallipoli. * Lance-Sergeant R. A. Ridley, reported wounded, is the.- well-known Christehurch cricketer and ex-hockey nlayer. Prior to enlisting with the Eighth Reinforcements, he vas a member of tho Ciiristchurch staff of Dalgetx and Co.

Mr Kippenberger, of Oxford, has received a cable from Base Records stating that his eldest son. Private Howard Karl Kippenberger, has been admitted to the 2nd London General Hospital, suffering from severe shrapnel wounds in his left arm.

Mrs Mary Smith. Riverside, Ashburton Countv. hat, received cable advice that her son, Private A. Smith, who ir.as wounded, and who is in the New Zealand General Hospital at Brockcnhurst, is improving.

Rifleman B. Harley. in a letter to a friend in Ashburton, states that he is now in hospital at.Oxford. England. His wounds, received in the Somme

battle, consisted of severe injuries to his arm and stomach. The shell from which his wounds were received landed in tlie trench beside him, and killed two of lus mates. Mrs S. Nelson, Greenstreet, Ashburton, received a cable on Tuesday stating that Private Albert Belliman, of Greenstreet, was admitted to the 3rd Australian General Hospital on November 21st, suffering from neuritis. Mr P.. Reddeeliffe, of Wakanui road, has received advice that his son. Private F. J. Peddce.liffc. was admitted to the London General Hospital on November 21st, suffering from a bomb wound in the chest. """ Mr (Jr. It. Tilson, Hinds, has received advice that his brother. Private W. 11. Tilson, who had previously received eight bullet wounds in tho thigh, was removed to a convalescent depot at Hornchtfreh oa November 22nd. Mrs B. Donn. 22 Sherborne street, has received the following letter from Lieutenant-Colonel H. Stewart, Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Infantry:—October Bth. 1916. 2nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry Regiment. T>ear Mrs Donn, —I wish to express to you my very sincere sympathy in the loss of your son, Lieutenant J. M. Donn. He was killed instantaneously by rifle fire on tho afternoon of October Ist during tho capture of some German trenches near the village of Flers. He died without any pain, and we buried him and put a cross over his grave. Your son had already proved himself a first-rate officer, as he had alwaj's been a most reliable and efficient non-commissioned officer/ His loss will be severely felt by liis company and the battalion, and particularly by those of us. who had, for now over two years, been with him- on active service. I trust that in your sorrow you will find some consolation in tho thought of his gallant record and that he died a brave death on the battlefield. With deepest sympathy, believe me, yours sincerely, H. Stewart. Private advice states that Lance-Cor-noral Reynolds, a son of Mr W. E. Reynolds, of Dunedin, who was reported wounded, was killed by a shell explosion in the Sommo trenches on September 17th. Mr G. H. Byrant, of Geraldine, has received word that his son, Private John William Herbert, died at Reading Hospital on November 24th. He left with the Sixth Reinforcements, twelve months ago. He was seriously ill with enteric, but rejoined tire ranks .about March, 1916. In the Teat advance on September 25th, he was severely wounded and sent to Reading Hospital. There he took typhoid fever and died. He was well known in Geraldine, being educated at Geraldine District High School. Ho was a member of the Geraldine Band and Hockey Club. He had hi s 21st birthday in the trenches. Mr Alexander Protheroe, of Elgin, has received advice that his son, Rifleman E. Protheroe, was admitted to tho 2nd London General Hospital on November 16th, suffering from severe varicocele. Mrs R. M. Claridge, Cox street, Ashburton, hag been advised that her son, Sergeant A. W. Claridge, previously reported mifcsing, is now reported as "having been killed, in action on September loth. Mrs All wood, of Charles street, Allen ton, Ashburton, has received word that her son, Private John Allwood, has returned to the front. Rifleman E. Olscn (killed in action) was the youngest son of Mr Anders Olson, of Eketahuna. Prior to enlisting ,h 0 was in cha'rgo of the ironmongery" department •at the Eketahuna branch of the W.F.C.A. He was also for a number of years employed in tho firm's Carterton branch, Mr David Johnston, of Porowhita (Ashburton County), has received the following letter from the captain of tho company to which Mr Johnston's son. Corporal W. Johnston, was attached at tho .time of his death in action hi France: —"Dear Sir, —1 wish to convey my very deepest sympathy to you on the death of your son, Corporal D. Johnston, also that of my one surviving officer and the rest of ray company. Your son was one of the best N.C. officers J have ever had any-', thing to do with, and his death is deplored by us all. He had done exceptionally good work all through. Ho had been doin e some very dangerous work the night he met his death, and saved a very difficult situation. His mates of his section found his bodv tho nest day. and buried him just inside the trench. I trust that the knowledge that bo met his death doing his duty so nobly will somewhat soften the blow.''
