THE "ANTIS."
OPPOSITION TO MILITARY SERVICE ACT. MANIFESTO TO BALLOTED MEN. MEETING CALLED FOR i'O-NIGHT. The new war regulations w j ncn wer# gazetted on Tuesday will possibly have to lie resorted to without any'delay owing to th,. extraordinary behaviour of the "anti-militariNts"' and "antioonscriptionUts" i-f.'.ling themselves tho "Conscription Repeal League." Last night we received information that many local citizens whoso names appeared the other day in the fird draw under the Military .Service Art have received a circular and a mani- ; festo from tlik "League." No discrimination appears to have been made in sending out tir.--c notices, which have, apparently, been i'oi warded to all and sundry, and naturally, ninny young men whose sympathies are with national service, have Wen considerably annoyed in consequence. Accompanying the manifesto in each case was a small printed slip, reading •is. follows: — "Yon arc invited to nttond a meeting in the Alexandra Hall, on Thursday. December 7th. at S p.m., f or the purpose of discussing the attitude balloted men should take regarding conscription . "(Signed'* "CONSCKIPTION II KPEAL LEAGUE. "This invitation only will admit you to.tho meeting." This notice issued to the balloted men. is accompanied hy a "manifesto," which ends, in capital letters, "Now is the time! New Zcalanders! Repeal the Act." Tho manifesto is signed "Manifesto Committee. Conscription Repeal League." with the imprint "ftepeal Print, Christehnrch." It- commences, "Fellow ritizens," and, after an exordium referring to "the popular, and wo think unnecessary law," it goes on to tho length of tAvelvo clauses, into which are compressed most of the catch words and extravagances of the anti-mili-tSrists' nnd disloyalists' vocabulary, and a liberal number of mis-statements and false suggestions. Tt is unnecessary to print the manifesto in full, copies of which were left with us by a deputation of men who were drawn in the ballot and who have no sympathy Tvitk tho .League- or its works.
Tho publication of the manifesto will possibly be held to he an oftVnco against the anti-sedition recu'.ationa made under the War Regulations Act.
