BELGIUM FUND.
ASHBURTON COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Aahburton Belgium Relief Fund Committee* was held on Saturday afternoon. Mr H. F. Nicoll, the chairman, stated "that the financial etai.2 of tne fund •was that the committee had £150 12s 6d in the bank, and £350 on fixed deposit. It had been suggested that a public meeting should be called, with a view to raising a substantial sum towards the jelief of the suffering Belgian children, and to • forward it he 'amount raised as a Christina© offering. He thought it was "up to them ' to do all they possibly could, and thai a special appeal be made to the general public. _ A. letter was read from the Ashburton Shakespeare Club, to the effect that the club purposed staging "The Merchant of Venice, and that the proceeds would bo handed to the committee, to go towards the proposed Christmas offering for the Belgian children. It was decided to thank the Shakespeare. Club for their offer of assistance On the motion of M r Wm. Harding, it waa decided to call a public mfceting for Saturday next.
