The Hon. James Allen leaves Dunedin by the second express to-day on his return to Wellington. Mr Thomas Brown returned from Sydney and Newcastle by the Manuka yesterday. Tho Hon. W. Eraser, Minister of Public Works, received a number of deputations yesterday. The Minister leaves for Greymouth this morning. Sergeant F. A. Hornibrook. who has been spending his final leave in Christchurch, will leave for the North this evening to join the staff of the hospital ship Marama as masseur. A letter was received by the Jsorth Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday from Dr. Inglis, resigning his position as lion, radiolo* gist. Tho Rev. I. K. Mclntyre, acting on medical advice, will resign the . charge of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Dunedin, at tho end of March, which period will complete his twenty-second year of service. Mr Justice Sim has been appointed a Royal Commissioner to enquire into the purchase by tho Otago Hospital Board of a property at Wakari. near Dunedin, for the purposes of a secondary hospital. Mr and Mrs Simon McKenzie. of Timaru, aftor a sty of some months in New South Wales, returned with one of their sons, who has been at College in Sydney, by the Manuka yesterday, and wont south by the second express. At Sumner last evening the Reception and Send-off Committee welcomed home Major Beattie, and made a presentation. of a pipe and a, tobacco pouch to Private Box, of the 20th Reinforcements. Mr B. M. Wilson, general manager af the Tourist and Health Departments, joins the Hinemoa at Bluff to-morrow, and goes by her to tho West Coast Sounds to make preparations for the approaching tourist season. Sister Gooding, who was in charge of ! the Casualty Ward at Lyttelton for some years, and recently was transferred to the charge of the infirmary t at the Jubilee Home, has resigned from the latter position, aud Staff Nurse Williams has been appointed to the vacancy.

Reference to tho death of the late Mr C. A. C. Cuningham was made at the • annual meeting of shareholders of the Mutual Benefit Building and Investment Society of Canterbury yesterday by tho chairman, Mr S. Manning. Mr Cuningham, said Mr Manning, had joined the Board of Directors at tile inception of the society in 1873, and was a member of the Board for thirty-one years.

In the course of their report to tho annual meeting of shareholders of the Canterbury Central Co-operative Dairy Company yesterday, the directors recorded with extreme regret the loss tho company had sustained through the deaths of Messrs A. Anderson, G. Stanhiry, J. Rennie, and F. Beker,.for many years directors of the company. TLe chairman, Mr J. Barnett, spoke feelingly of tho character and services of tho late directors.

Mr James Stewart, who has held the position of genoral secretary to the South Otago Freezing Company sinco Jts formation six years ago, has been appointed manager of tho recentlyformed North Canterbury Co-operative Freezing Company, with works at Kaiapoi (says the "Balclutha Freo Press")'. Mr Stewart has acted as secretary to the Clutha River Board, and has also for somo timo acted as secretary of the Balclutha Patriotic Association.
