Local as well as national safety is receiving attention (writes our Sydney correspondent). The Railway Commissioners of Victoria, who believe in the "safety first" principle, are about v , e r r Pf r ! lnent with signals that will bo ugnted m tho dav time as well as at aight. Thoro are along tho semaphore tows of electric lights which at a littJo listanco away blend so as to form continuous lines. It is said that under •his system the signals are visible at a rouch longer distance even in the brightest sunlight tlian with the existing methods. Wo are told that on the Pennsylvania (U.S.A.) railway system this etching out of tho railway semaphore arms with electric light instead'of depending solely on the visibility of tho arm bv daylight, and on single coloured ughj* during the night, has been in use for over two years, and has proved ttighly satisfactory.
