AGAINST CONSCRIPTION. A LABOUR MANIFESTO. (By Cabl«.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Australiiu and N.Zi Cable Association..) (Received July 31st. 10.20 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 31. The Executive of the Trades Union Congress, held in May, has circulated a manifesto against conscription. After referring to the effect of conscription in Britain and France, the manifesto states: "Trade unionists will contend with all the powers and resources at their disposal against the enactment of the conditions imposed, under the pretence of national salvation, upon the workers of other countries." EYERY FIT MAN DEEDED. SYDNEY, July 31. Speaking at the Commercial Travellers dinner, Senator Gardiner said: — "If we have a long war every fit man will eventually have to -find his way to the front." Referring to conscription | of wealth, ho said: "When the democracy of Australia agrees to send men, it will also agree to take money." RETURN OP MR HUGHES. (Received July 31st, 10.20 p.m.) FREMANTLE, July 31. Mi- W. M. Hughes has arrived. He briefly stated that ho was satisfied with the results of his visit to England. REGISTRATION OF ALIENS. SYDNEY, July 31. A new war regulation requires the keepers of hotels and boarding-houses to register the names and nationalities of- all aliens staying on their premises.

(Received August Ist, 12.55 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 31. Senator Pearce, Minister of Defence, authorised a search of the "Labour Call", newspaper office. Certain anticonscription leaflets containing seditious statements , were seized.* The wording of the leaflets was subsequently amended.
