At the luncheon of the Imperial Council of Commerce, Mr W. M. Hughes, in responding to the toast of tlie guests, said the first meeting of the Fleets in anything like battle array had dissolved all doubts as to the result of future conflicts.
Referring to his visit to France, Mr Hughes said:—"Although the position there is incomparably better than a year ago, we still lack the power, to break down the German defence. The end is not near. The Allies cannot hold on for over. ."What must be done must be done quickly. Our needs in machinery and munitions must be immediately supplied. We cannot be victorious unless we develop every resource and exert every power." SINGLE INCOME-TAX. EAR I A* AGREEMENT URGED.

The Conference of the Imperial Council of Commerce passed a resolution urging an early agreement between the Governments of Britain and the Dominions to secure a single incometax within tiie Empire on incomes wherever earned.
