ANNUAL MEETING OF SUBSCRIBERS. The seventh annual meeting of subscribers to tho Linwood Public Xiibrary mn held last night, about fifty people being present, including the patron, (tho Mayor) and Councillors H. F. Herbert and D. G. Sullivan. The president (Mr W. W. Tanner) occupied the chair. Tho report of the committee was as follows:—The progress of the Library during the past year has been the most satisfactory since its inception, in that we have been enabled to complete the extensions to the building, for. which we have been working for several years, thanks to the valuable assistance rendered by the Christchurch City Council. It gives us great pleasure to meet the subscribers for the first time in the new building, which is now thoroughly equipped with every modern convenience, and is considered to be one of tho finest suburban libraries in tie Dominion. It should meet the requirements, of the subscribers for many yeaTS to come. It is pleasing .to note that there has been a considerable increase in the number of subscribers. We have no fewer than 636, the number joining during the year being 259. _ Resignations numbered 140, leaving an increase of 119. During the year we lost the services of two members of the committee, viz., Messrs Fish and Tayler. These gentlemen rendered valuable assistance to the Library during their term of office, and your thanks are due to them for their services. The books of the Library are in excellent condition, and there are now 5190 volumes on the shelves. The' number of books purchased during the year was 727.. The cost of the additions to the Library was £450. Of this sum the Christchurch City Council provided the sum of £350. the remaining £100 being provided out of funds set aside from time to time for several years for this particular purpose. The Library has agreed to pay interest to the Christchurch City Council on £275 at 5 per cent. During the year your committee have had to provide j funds for renovating the original portion of the building, including the entrance hall; also £13, being part cost of installing elcctric light and fittings; the erection of bookshelves and covering the floors with linoleum. involviug a total expenditure of £102 9s Id. The accounts pf the Library are in a very satisfactory condition, as is disclosed by the balance-sheet, there being no outstanding pliabilities, and the assets represent £656 0s od. Tho work of the committee for the year has been rather strenuous, on account of the alterations and stocktaking. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. Mr Holland 6poko in support of the bal-.mcc-sbeet, and congratulated the. committee and residents of the district on the great raccQas of the Library. He stated that ho bad the interests of the Library at heart, but regretted that lie lisid "not the time to devote to it that he should liko. Crs. Herbert and Sullivan both spoke in eulogistic terms as to .the work of the n r efficiency of ito officiate.
