CHRISTCHURCH POULTRY CLUB.

rOItTY-NINTH ANNUAL SHOW

Patron: Mi W. Ballantvne. President: Mr J. McLean. Secretary: Mr R. Pearce. Treasurer: Mr J. H. Shaw. The first show of tho Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club was held in the Town Hal] in 1868, and tho latest show of tho club was held in the Colosseum yesterday, and will be continued till 10 p.m. to-morrow, i Sincc the first snow held by the club, which was also the first of its kind in New Zealand, tho annual fixture has been helfl in divers places, the last in the present locale in 1908. j Time has seen many changes in several of the breeds, both in their appearante and number of votaries, and some breeds that were once in fashion have gone to tho wall, and are not: seen at the show under notice, and somo aro seldom seen at any show nowadays. "What with the war and with its bereavements, and its toll of i the fancy and toe liigh price of feed, j it was not anticipated that the entry j at this year's show would be a good one, but thanks to the efforts of a number of members the entry is a surprise, thero being 647 poultry, 500 pigeons, 188 canaries, 'IS7 cats, and 11S in the cookery classes, the grand total being 16-15. Leaving the cookery section out, thero is 1527, an entry that has only been beaten once since 1008. Nor has the total number of birds been higher, but once since 1908. The figures showing the number of birds in the. three sections, however,

arc not near records for the club, the best being 1019 poultry in 190G; 593 pigeons in I'JOS, and 206 canaries, and other cage birds in 1911: the best grand total obtained "was 1654 in the feathered sections in 1906, and this number is about 400 ahead of any other New Zealand record. Tho club also holds many class and breed records. This year another has been put up. namely, lor long-faced Tumblers and-cats. Coming to the exhibits, modern game Dpened the ball, and very fine they are. Old English game, though good, hardly ;qual the modern in quality. Indian game are fair, but no better specimens lave been seen in the Dominion. Minor-:-as are also few in numbers, but some iro. of rare quality. Brown and black Leghorns maintain the high standard that is usually seen at this show, bub Whites have fallen away, both iu quality and in numbers. Tlie Anconas improve each year at this show in point >f quality. The Plymouth Rocks are not so numerous as in some past years, but the quality remains good. There las been ,a big falling-off in Orpingtons, both in numbers and in quality in the jpen classes. Those in the utility section make up, especially the pullets, the finest seen here. Chief interest \inong fanciers centred in the "Silver Wyandotte?, and, as on many previous occasions. and at several shows the display continues to rank among the best. Grolden Wyandottes. though good, do not take hold of the fancier like the Silvers, nor are they so high class. White "Wyandottes are usually excellent, but this year they are not up '.o past shows. The Leghorns in the utility section are a feature of the <hnw; the fashionable variety in America is Rhode Tsland reds. Judging bv ihe progress of the breed licv, it will -oon ' !>c fashionable in the Dominion. Breeders are asking the correct shade )f red, but .judges differ. Hamburg*

aro weaker than ever, and probably, like many other old breeds, they will go to the a.o.v. class unless breeders wake up. Ducks do not seem to attract the fancier, and both geeso ana turkeys were conspicuous by their absence. in the pigeon section there was a fine colicction of long distance flyers, over 200 boing shown, in the pink of condition. Next in point, of numbers came long-faced Tumblers, there being _181 in the open classes and 1(3 in the junior, a-New Zealand record. The clean-legged setf-colours and mottles were never better represented. There wero a lew nice black Baldlieads. but none of the other colours or Beards, conspicuous at some past shows, wero present. In the Muff classes Blues and Silvers were the best in quality, and there were three as nice Badges as has been seen at a Christchurch show, but, the other varieties liave been bettor in the past. The performing tumblers drew two capital classes and the Almond and its subvarieties were the best seen here. Dragoons were excellent in quality, but not as numerous as anticipated. Magpies (black) maintain their quality, but the ; others were poor; the competition in this breed shows signs of improvement. Good specimens of short-faced Tumblers. Nuns, Fantails, Jacobins, and Frills : are on exhibition, but the whole would not make a good class in point of liumbais. The Canaries are a mixed lot. Both in Norwich and Yorkshires there are birds that stand out from the others, those that stand out are exceptional specimens, the others are rather common. The cats will be penned to-morrow. The judges wore as follows: — Mr R. (Christchurch), Brown Buff, Pile. Duckwing. and Blue Leghorns, and Anconas. Mr H. G. Hunt (Christchurch); "White

Leghorns, Black Leghorns, and Minoreas. ~- Mr A. Gapes (Christchurch), I,"\Vyaudottes, Orpingtons, and Black llosecomb Bantams. Mr F. Dacro (Christchurch), all other classes in the Open Section. Mr R. W. Hawko (Christchurch), Light Breeds in Utility Classes. Mr J. Tindallj Heavy Breeds in Utility Classes. Mr C. Cussen (Government Poultry Instructor), all Egg Classes. Working Homers, Mr T. Newton (Christchurch). All Other Varieties. Captain Arthur Allen (New Plymouth). Canaries, Mr J. M. 'Ihomson (Auckland). Cats. Mr Fred Briggs (Christchurch). Cookery, Mr B. Cotton (Christchurch) (foreman Broadway's). PRIZE LIST. POULTRY. Open Classes. Modern Game—Black, red or brown, cock (2): F. C. Parsons 1. Hen (2): R. Boswell 1. P. C. Parsons 2. Cockerel (6)": R.
