DISCIPLINARY MEASURES IN
LONDON
Ihe solute given to officers bearing 'his Majesty's commission is regarded as an important and essential form of discipline. In recent months there has been a sad neglect of this obligation by soldiers walking through London streets (says an English paper). The explanation, writes a London correspondent, is simple. In the principal thoroughfares the pavements are thronged with men in khaki, and officers in uniform are constantly passing. A man walking from the Law Courts to Charing Cross would seldom have his right hand by his side if he Avere to carry out the letter of the military law. Soldiers soon tired of this continuous round of saluting, and some officers no doubt found the repetition of the return salute a little tedious. The Army Council, however, kikes a serious view of this breach of military etiquette, and has issued a drastic order requiring upon all occasions recognition of his Majesty's commission under threat of punishment. If men on furlough omit to salute an officer their leave msy be stopped at once. In all cases brought to the notice of the authorities disciplinary measures -will be taken. The military police arc charged with the duty of reporting instances of neglect on the part of the men.
