"AVONHOLME" GARDEN FETE. POSTPONED TILL NEXT SATURDAY. In view 01 the squally weather experienced on Saturday morning, a meeting of the Gardbn Fete Committee of the Wholesalo and Retail Section of the Queen Election was held to consider the question of holding the function. Mr S. A. Orchard presided over a good attendance. It was decided to postpone the garden fete till next Saturday all the arrangements made holding good for next Saturday; PUBLIC SERVICES' QUEEN. The committee of the Public Services' Quecri have hit on a new idea for their gala, namely, to give Christchurch neople an insight into tho inner working of some of the most important public services, with interesting demonstrations. The' Post and Telegraph Department will show instruments used sixty years ago and now. Mr Plank will show and explain to visitors the evolution of the instruments. In telephones the changes have been wonderful. , The first one Mr Plank will show has a receiver and transmitter in one, about the size of. a quart pot. The improvements on this type to the automatic should evoke admiration. Tho wonders of wireless will alsb bo illustrated. Mr E. E. Stark, city electrical engineer, will give experimental demonstrations in electricity, electro-mag-

uetio induction; the basis of how an electric motor is set in motion by the current, and high tension and high frequency phenomena. Tho Harbour Board is sending an exhibit; the Addington Workshop employees have shown what they can do in somp beautifully finished cabinet work; the Agricultural Department has sent a considerable portion of the exhibit which attracted so much attention in Panama ; and to wind up, the Civil servants have made, bought, and will offer for sale a most enticing collection ol' sweets and ices. The exhibition will be open all this week in the Colosseum. The draw for places to-day in connexion with the tug-of-war contest, is as follows:—Council Yard v. L.H.B. I'cclamation; Jnrrah Timber v. Tramways; L.H.B. Stores v. Railway Casuals A; L.H.B. Works v. Railway Maintenance Works; Telegraph Linesmen v. I'aihvav Casuals B; Sailors' Home v. Dredge Canterbury; Council Linesmen a bye. SUMNER GIRL QUEEN. A sports afternoon was held on tho beach at Sumner on Saturday in aid of the Sumner Girl Queen. Owing to the cokl weather there was only a moderate attendance. A fancy-dress procession was held on the bcac!:, wheie a sports programme was carried out. Hoop-la. in charge of Messrs J. flarvey and G. Graham, did good business, and a half-mile trotting race for draught horses caused great amusement, and resulted: Mr G. Blazey's Tip Dray 1, Mr W. Y. Heyee's Gas Meter 2, Mr T. E. Whitfield's Good Thing 3. There were six other starters. The children's races resulted as follows: —

One Mile Bievele Rafce: G. Li-ndroos 1, W. Taylor 2, S. White 3. A very successful concert was held in the Redcliffs Schoolroom in the evening, the proceeds being in aid of- the Redcliffs candidate. There was a packed house. Items were given by tho following:—Mrs E. A. Pidgeon,' Redcliffs school children, Mr England, Miss E. M.. Twentyman, Master E. Moon, Miss Barr, Sumner Patriotic Club, Miss Smith, the Reaeliffs Ministrels, and Messrs Roberts, Trewen, Peek, and Johnuon.

A concert in aid of the Sumner Queen was held in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, when there was a large and appreciative 'audience. Items | were given by Mrs H. AY. Heslop, Mrs iA. T. J. AVithers. At the ! conclusion of the concert a largeTrumber of articles were disposed of by Dutch auction, the auctioneer being Mr j J. Harvey. SOLDIERS' QUEEN. At the first count of votes in connexion with the Girl Queen Contest Election, the position of the candidates was as under: — No. 3, Miss May Throp (C.D.C.) ... 1 No. 1, Miss Jessie Loach (Returned and Active Soldiers) ... ... 2 No. 2. Miss Trixie Bradley (Territorials) ... ..; 3 The second. of the weekly series of concerts held by the C.D.C. on the balcony of Messrs R. S. McKenzie and G'o.'s premises, in aid of the Soldiers' Queen, took place on Saturday evenfng, before a large audience. The C.D.C. Band occupied the triangle at the intersection of Cashel and High streets. The vocal portion of the programme, organised by Mesdames Allen and Donn. was contributed by Mesdames Stanley East and J. Henry, and Messrs Gillmore and AV. T. McKay. Miss Maud Stringer acted as accompanist.

Ladies willing to hel'i at the Gala and Military Sports, on Saturday next, at the Trotting Grounds, Addington, are requested to attend a meeting tomorrow evening, at the C.D.C. Rooms, Hereford street. INDUSTRIES' GROUP. - 1 A meeting of all sections of the Industries Group was held on Saturday evening at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms. Mrs "Walter Hill boing present, and Mr Goss presiding. There was a very good attendance. The sub-committec appointed to arrange a concert, on Good Friday evening reported that in order to avoid clashing with the Soldiers' Group, who had already obtained normiesion from the Citv Council to hold a concert- on that date, they recommended that the concert be not proceeded ■with. The report was adopted. It was decided to apply to 'the Minister of Internal Affairs for permission" to postpone the drawing of the arj unions until May loth, and to cease selling tickets from April 23th.
