FIFTEENTH EEIXFORCEMENTS. DOMINION SHORTAGE OF NEARLY 500 MEN. (rs ESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, April 7. Tiic shortage in the 15th Reinforc-e- ---. merits, who were mobilised this week, lias been increased by the arrival of the" southern drafts below their proper strength. Canterbury and Otago. like Auckland and Wellington, have failed to lincl their full quotas, and the net shortage appears likely to reach a total of nearly. -100 men. The present shortages in the Infantry are approximately Ps follows:— Auckland ... ... 74 Wellington ... ... 255 Canterbury ... ... 84 Otago ... ... 58 Total ... ... 471 This total is expected to be increased by about 1G when the West Coast section of the Canterbury draft arrives to-morrow. The Otago draft went into cainp to-day, and was found to lack 5S men in the Infantry section. All the other branches were full in the case o? both Canterbury and Otago. Tile Defence Headquarters lias asked the - military districts to make up their shortages in the loth Reinforcements Infantry by Friday next. SIXTEENTH REINFORCEMENTS. INFANTRY SECURED. The following infantry have so far been secured from group areas in the Canterbury district fop the Sixteenth Reinforcements:— Christchureli ... ... 21 Timaru ... ... 15 Kr.iapoi ... ... 23 AMBULANCE DRAFT. The Canterbury district has been asked to supply seven Ambulance men i'o> Awapum camp to report there on Friday, April 14th. The draft is already available. The following men liave been selected from the Christchurch group area:—J. G. Hughes, W. M. La wry, and C. Rolls. THE TRIFLERS. llccruiting-Sergeant Livingstone, of the Government Recruiting Office in Christchurch, is writing to 150 men who ..have registered for service, but have not attended their medical examinations. The recruiting sergeants were on tho chase again on Thursday night for triflers, but were" only able to get hold of two men. One was able to prove that he was unfit, whilst the other was described as uncertain. His mother wants him to go, but his best girl refuses to allow him.

Several of the men seen by the re>cruiting sergeants state that it is no use their attending the medical examination as they are unfit, to which the sergeants retort that they might as well put their statement to the test by., parading before the doctors, but very few have availed themselves of the invitation. SCHOOLMASTER'S EXAMPLE. Mr H. G. Wake, headmaster of the East Christchurch School, has. registered for service, and attended his medical examination. The chief reason for his trying to get away was the hope that the example of an older man ivould influence the younger men. MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS. Fifteen men attended the medical examination held at the Government Recruiting Office on Thursday, with the following result: — . Fit ... ... ... 1 Temporarily unfit ... 11 Unfit ... ... ... 3 Of the temporarily unfit three require surgical operations, whilst the rest merely have to undergo dental treatment. t Following are the names of the men who were examined: —J. Two. men who liad registered in Christchurch for active service, on being handed their medical papers yesterday, refused to attend before the doctor, stating that they did not intend to proceed further with the matter. CASHMERE. Members of the Cashmere Unit of the Citizens' Defence Corps will meet at l'ack wood's Rooms to-morrow (Sundav) morning at 10 o'clock, to canvass the district. Non-members who are •wining to assist in the recruiting canvass are asked to attend. CANVASSING IN FAIRLIE DISTRICT. (special to "the press.") TIMARU. April 7. At a meeting held at Fairlie yesterday, it was decided to employ a returned soldier who holds the rank of lance-corporal to make a personal canvass of the county under the Government's new recruiting scheme. They

agreed to give him the same pay as he received when he was with the forces, plus 30s a week for board. This will relieve members of the Council from taking part in tho work of canvassing. MAORIS AND RECRUITING. DR. POMARE'S CAMPAIGN. (iTtS-S ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND. April 7. ':The difficulty which has hampered recruiting among the Maoris of the Hokianga district has. I am glad to say, been removed." said the Hon. Dr. Poma-.e in discussing the results of his recruiting tour in the Far North. Dr. Poniare added that the enlistments among the northern Maoris were quite satisfactory. A fillip had been given to it by the fact that the members of the Maori Contingent at the front, who had been temporarily attached to various other New Zealand forces while at Gallipoli, had again been brought together into a separate unit.
