AVONSIDE NURSING DIVISION. Ai the weekly meeting of the Avonside Nursing .Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade there was an attendance of 38. Members had practice in roller bandaging, after which Dr. Jo3sie" Maddison gave a short lecturo ou infantile paralysis. FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the United Friendly Societiee' Benevolent Association lield on Tuesday evening, Bro. H. Le Compte, president, presiding over a fair meeting of delegates. Bro. Le Compt-o briefly referred to the large number of friendly societies members who were on active service for their King and country and hoped t-hey -would largely assist to bring about a lasting and hononrablo peace. The Canterbury Trades and Labour Council met last week, Mr H. "Worrall presiding over a good attendance. New delegates were welcomed from the Bootmakers', Tramway Employees'. General Labourers', and Printers' Machinists' L'niov. The Minister of Justice wrote in further reply that no legal power existed to appoint v-omen Justices of tho Peace, but that when the legislation of the coming year wa a being considered, tha question of appointing women Justices would be taken into consideration. The letter wa-s received. At) appeal for financial assistance was received from the secretary of the Petono 'Woollen Mills Union on behalf of tho members who are at present involved in industrial trouble. It was decided to make a weekly donation while the trouble lasts, and to forward it through the United Federation of Labour; to protest to the Petone Union for not making its appoal to the unions affiliated through tiie national organisation, and to request iho United Federation of Labour to approach the District Councils as to whether any future appeals not coming through the national body should be recognised. A *etter was received from the Westland Railway League, requesting support in its agitation for the completion of the Otira tunnel. Tha following resolution was carried: —"That in view of the very substantial advantages accruing to tho community by the completion of the tunnel, we urge the Government to prosecute the work with all speed." The •executive reported that it had given consideration to the question of the disappearing sovereign, and recomijjended that » night be set "apart for the discussion of ihe subject.
