NEW BALL AT LINWOOD.

The Presbyterian Church has just erected a substantial hall at Lithvood for church servioes and Sunday school. The hall is built of "Poilite" and 'wood, and is very tastefully finished both outside and inside, reflecting credit on the architects, Messrs England Bros., and tjie contractor, Mr I'\ Shaw. Th© opening services were, held on •Sunday, and were conductcd by the Rev. John Paterson in the forenoon and afternoon, and in the evening by Mr Tennent. Mr Paterson preached a. very spiritual and powerful sermon at the forenoon service, and afterwards outlined the progress of the work in Linwood, and the .steps that had led to the erection of the hall. When further development took place it was intended to erect a church building. There were largo attendances at all services, and the collection?; were very satisfactory. The initial tea melting and entertainment was held on Tuesday. The Rev. J. Paterson presided, and there were present the Rovs. C. Murray, F. Rule, C. Strand (Wesleyan), H. A. Job (Congregational), Mr Bickerstaff (New Brighton), and Mr Tennent. After tea had been dispensed by the ladies the Rev. Mr Murray, on behalf of the Christ-church Presbytery, congratulated the Linwood' people on the possession of hall. The Revs. F. Rule, Job, Strand, and Bickerstaff ateo snoko. The Bev. Mr Paterson presented Mr' Tennent with a- number of theological works from the Linwood Committee, ae a tok?n of regard, end Kiss Cunningham (organist) received a presentation in recognition of her services. Songs w<\re given by the Rev. J. Paterson, Mr' H. McLood, Mrs Cuddi?, Miss I. Malcolm, Mrs J. Tennent, a pianoforte solo by Miss A. Gibb, and a violin solo by Miss M. Gibb. On Wednesday evening a gathering of teachers, parents, and scholars in connexion with iiie- Sunday School was held, at which tea wag dispensed, and a programme of musical items was given, also recitations by the Rev. J. Paterson and a character sketch by Mr A. F. Sutherland.
