AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. TO FAT CATTLE VENDORS AND PURCHASERS. CATTLE INSURANCE. A s you are 'well aware, we have conducted an Insurance Fond for ottr Customers, which insurance ia requisite to th© small traders, eo that they shall run no risk in the, condemnation of any beaata thoy may IIIJT. During the year vre controlled one-third of the Bale of cattlo in Addington Yards. Under our schema wo havo charged our euEtomeiß on a lower basis for insurnnoe than the Cattlo Insurance Fund has dona, and we havo promptly paid out oil claims. The Cattle Insurance Fund has, we understand, gone into liquidation. We havo received requests from over 40 butchere who kill at the Abattoirs out of about a possible 60, and over 90 graziess, who have Bold fat cattlo during tho puat year at Adding!cm, asking us to continue our Fund, and promising their whole-hearted support if wo will do so. V>o offered to take over the Insurance fox the whole of the Adding-ton Yards, and manago it for one or two yeans on tho same conditions that wo hare rnx> >ur own Fund. In opposition to us, tho majority of the other agents and a few butchars have apparently requested the Canterbury Solcyords Company to take over tho Insurance. Thia thoy have agreed to do, but while they intend to carry on tho Insurance Scheme, they have determined to put an end to our Fund. A letter, of which tho following is ft copy, was sent to us on the 30th December, 1915: — The Canterbury Savoyards Company, Hereford street, Chriatohurch, 31st December, 1915. . Meeer* H. Matson and Co., Chris tchurch, INSURANCE OF FAT-CATTLE, Dear Sirs, — The Directors have decided that from the let January, 1916, the below-mentioned rule shall operate at Addington Yards:— "All vendors of fat cattle passed for In- . surartce at Addington Yards shall contribute half tha fees in force from time to time for tho Insurance of Fat Cattle, and oil purchasers of such, cattle shall contribute th* other half, oxcept in cases where tho vendor guarantees such cattle, in which case insurance is not required.". The Company will, from-tha Ist January, continue the Insurance Fund under its own management, in lieu of the Cattle Insurance Fund, which has decided to discontinue -operation, and a scale of fees has been drawn up at a reduoed rato of 6d per head lees than the Cattle Fund rates hitherto in force. The Company does not intend to establish an Insurance Fund for profit, but merely to pay the cost of claims, wages, and expenses oi - operating the business. lAM INSTRUCTED TO ADVISE YOU THAT THE COMPANY WILL NOT PERMIT ANY OTHER CATTLE INSURANCE TO OPERATE IN COMPETITION WITH ITS FUND AT ADDINGTON YARDS. The Company asks stock agents to collect tho fees as hitherto, less a commission of 5 per cent. Schedule of fees will be forwarded to you before next Wednesday. This course has been decided upon'-at the urgent request of the MAJORITY OF THE STOCK AGENTS, THE MSSTEB BUTCHERS' ASSOCIATION/ AND THE EXECUTIVE OF THE CATTLE INSURANCE FUND.,, Yours faithfully, ' ARNAUD McKELLAR, Secretary, In our opinion the new Fund will not be run as economically as wo ran our Fund fcrr our customers. - That, however, is a matter for tho Company to consider, and wo do not wish to interfere with their business, but w« feel that a great injustice is being done tc our customers, and to ourselves, by arbitrarily stopping us from carrying on our Fund. However, the Saleyaidd Company are determined to monopolise the Insurance, We have to thank our customers for the support which they have accorded to our Inturanco Fund in the past, and for tho interest :-hey have taken ia the same by asking us tc continue it, and offering their support ia the future. We arte Barry, however, owing to the attitude that the Saleyaxda Company have adopted we cannot, as requested by cm customers, carry on our Insurance Schemes Under the circumstances, we have to xetactuntly close our Insurance Fund, which we feel was started and carried cm by us for the benefit of the operators in-tho cattle-market. -an&-CO v /
