RUSSIA'S CAMPAIGN.
RIGA-DVINSK FRONT, MINOR SUCCESSES. The High Commissioner reports:-— LONDON. January 13 (3.20 p.m.). At Olayvevk. a German attempt to cioss the Muscha failed. There was bayonet fighting east of Plakanen to the Russian advantage. Two linesjof enemy wire entanglements were cut on the railroad to Ponoviezh. The Germans were chased out of their trenches. THE SOUTHERN FRONT. AN AUSTRIAN CLAIM. SIX ATTACKS REPULSED. (Received January I3th, 10 p.m.) VIENNA, January 13. An official communique says:— "The Russians, on Tuesday, made six attempts to penetrate our lines near the Bessarabian frontier. They were repulsed and forced into a disorderly retreat. Eight'hundred dead Russians were counted on the front occupied by one Austrian battalion." THE RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE, SUSPENDED FOB THE PRESENT. ENEMY'S HUGE LOSSES. (Received January 13th, 7.30 p.m.) PETROGRAD, January 12. The Russian offensive on the southern front has been suspended for the present, as it has achieved the desired object of diverting enemy troops from France and the Balkans. The enemy has brought up reinforcements, and it is therefore considered inexpedient to press on further!
The Austro-German losses in three weeks were from 70,000 to 100,000 men. The enemy's efforts to dislodge the Russians from Czartorysk (on the Styr) have failed. A SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM, RECUPERATION OF RUSSIA. ("Times" and "Sydney Sun" Services.) (Received January 13th, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 12. The Petrograd correspondent of "The Times" optimistically describes the recuperation of Russia, as shown by the splendid armies at the front. A high officer states that Russfa is able to go on for as long as she is wanted. The technical services are constantly improving, and ,the output of munitions has been doubled. He is confident of the strength and the readinees of the country to endure any trials. The people are determined to vanquish their inveterate Teutonic foe.
