THE, EAR TWITCH. TO THE EDITOB OF "THE PRESS." Sir, —With reference to letters , in "The Prea3" this morning ear twitch, or, as I have called it, an inatrufiietit for tor"turing racehorses, I notice that this patent is ■ well recommended, and I would' not expect Mr Gallacher to say anything else about it. We axe to believe that: this driver is not cruel, also that the strongest man using it could not break the skin of the-horse's.ear. This is all nonsense. The device is for' inflicting pain to be?in with, however little; 'and the extent of the suffering caused depends on the humanity of' the operator. . It does not take a vjery strong man. to make another man cry: out when he has his fingers in the clips. Then a man can sing out when he has had enough pressure put on him, and tell you how- much he has suffered. But. the racehorse never says *a word, and the majority of tho public never see him beins; punished. I agree that this inatriimont is no sueed accelerator, and- never said so. My opinion of it is ouite the oprVosife. I also with Messrs Beslon and Ullrich that' this "device in the b->'nds of a or excitable driver could easily csuse the horse trreat and unnecessary pain. Jt is also true that I have been instructed to action wlienever the occasion arisee, sjvd I hope that no one using the instrument "will give me anv chances. It .is ouite possible ma3c« th'« instrument humane with, a little alteration, and to have it that a driver could not punish, a horse, even if he wanted to. This iron hand horse-controller would th*n eerve the purpose it is intended for.—Vours. etc.,. R. WETR, ' Inspector S.p.C.A. January 18th, IDI6. NOTES. Acceptances for the .Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting are due this evening. E. J". Mason's team for Wellington, comprising Emperador. Nones, Bimeter, Ticino, and Swale, will probably leave for Wellington to-night. . The Martian—Reel filly: Skirl, had gone to W. Jarris's stable at Wingatui. The filly, it is understood, has been leased by a patron of that establishment from Mr O. Reid. Merry Lass is again being hacked about by T. Sheenan, who has planned a course over the battens for the aged daughter of Finland and Pleasure Seeker. ' Acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting close . at 9 o'clock this evening) and at the same time entries close for the Trial Plate and Disposal Stakes. The amount paid to the Government

by the Canterbury Park Trotting' Chib over its recent Summer Meeting was £1225 0s od as stamp duty, 5s as the tax on dividends, and £30 as the tax on stakes.

Mr E: Fox will represent the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club ; and Mr R. Wallace "the Canterbury Park Trotting Club, at the meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference to be held in Wellington next Wednesday. The committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club Has decided that in future a trophy value 50 guineas is to be awarded to any horse breaking a track record in a race at any of the club's, meetings.

Killena, Kilkee, and Down will make up M. Hobbs's complement for the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting, and W. McDonald will have First Glance and Teviotdale on the scene of action some time next week.

H. Cutts will go north with Flying Start, Adjutant, Battle Eve, 'Wrestler, Harlequin, and Court Martial. The last-named will not race at Trentham, but will be taken on after the Meeting to the Egmont and Taranaki fixtures.

l>nytime, who did not show any form in the south subsequent his strenuous efforts at Iticcarton m November, has been eased up. Another of A. McAulay's team, in Encore, probably saw the last of the race track, the suspensory ligament of one of his fore legs, which has given trouble for some time, finally giving out when the Maniapoto gelding ran at Dunedin last month. On Tuesday evening the Judicial Committee of tiie Westland Kaoing Club further enquired into the injury received by the jockey, Wasley, in the Welter Weight Handicap at the Club's recent fixture. After evidence had been heard the committee were of opinion that F. Langstone committed the assault as alleged, and decided that he be disqualified during the pleasure of the Club.

The adjourned .meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference to consider the report of the executive in regard to the appointment of stipendiary stewards takes place in Wellington on Wednesday next. When the matter was under discussion at Tuesday's meeting of the Trotting Association, the president, who will be- present at the Conference as the Board's representative, said that he would, of course, support the scheme put forward lly the Executive of the Conference, for he had long been in favour of the appointment of stipendiary stewards, and it was a good manv years ago since he had himself brought the question before the Conference. With a view to strengthening the hands of the president in this matter, the Board passed a resolution instructing him to support the scheme to be brought before the Conference next week.
