CANTERBURY PATRIOTIC FUND.

LITTLE BITER. A meeting of the Patriotic Committee was bold in the (Joronat'.on Library on Tuesday. Present—Messrs 11. Aitken (treasurer), Whatman, Thompson. Crockett, Montgomery, Johnson. Ja-j. Tho report of tho sub-comiritt-ee appointed to forward £50 worth cf goods to hospitals at Alexandria, Sues, Malt*, and Cairo was read and approved. The treasurer rend a. statement showing the financial position. The cash in hand amounted to approximately £150. but with tho exception of about £10 it was all earmarked. It was agreed that £20 bo voted to the local Red Cross Society, and that Mrs Montgomery be fmpoworod to -epend £10 monthly until the end of March nest to provide email comforts for the troops. Tho Sheffield Biding Patriotic Committee held its monthly meetuig at Mr AT. Watson's residence on Tuesday. There wta a full attendance cf members, and tho president, Mr W. J. Jenkins, occupied the chair. A voto of sympathy with tho Rev. .T. Johnston in 'the loss of his son at the front was carried in eilence. Captain Atwcll wroto regarding the formation of a Tecrniting committee. Tho matter was referred to the County Council, the predominant tone of the meeting being dec-idedly in favour of conscription. The secretary a,nd treasurer wero instructed to prepare arid forward a. balance-sheet to headquarters. It wa« decided not to register, but. to agree to be represented at tho conference of the Patriotic Committees to be held in February. Mrs Erikson was thanked for her lively interest in patriotic matters while in the district, tuid appointed the representative of the committee in Christohurch. The eecretary announced that the monthly function had resulted in tho sum of £40 being raised, and satisfaction was expressed that with so little cffoTt the committee had done so well.
