CANTERBURY PATRIOTIC FUND.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE

The Executive Cornmittco , of tlic Canterbury Patriotic Fund met yesterday. Mr H. Holland presiding. Tlic General Manager of the Bank of New Zealand advised that the donation of £10,000 made by tho shareholders was to go to the National Fund for the relief, of wounded soldiers. Mr Nordon moved that the sum of £250 from the Wounded Soldiers' Fund should be cablcd to Lord" l'lunket, president of the War Contingents' Association, for the relief of wounded Canterbury soldiers in England. The chairman said the committee had already decided not to send the money. The Minister of I>efencc had advised there was no need for it. Mr Turnbull said the men in' England wcro under adequate care. He considered, however, that £230 should be sent to the hospitals in Egypt for providing comfort- for the wounded soldiers there. ' The chairman said that the Red Cross Society 1 were attending to the matter of tlic wounded in Egypt. Mr I>ougali said that acoording to the military regulations -wounded soldiers in hospital or in convalescent camps reefcived no pay at all. It was the duty of the Government to see that the men were properly looked after in hospital. If anything further was sent for extras it should not be sent through the Government. Mr C. J. Williams said that despite what the Minister stated, lie thought it was necessary to send the money. Mr Sorensen suggested that the other committees might be communicated with, and a joint contribvftion sent. ' ' ' . Mr Nordon replied that other centres had already forwarded contributions for . the purpose. The motion was carricd. It was also decided, on the motion of Mr A. H. Turnbull, to send £250 for the benefit of the men in hospital in Egypt. • « It was decided to extend the fund's Christmas box donation of 5s to the wives and children of all Canterbury soldiers. Mr Williams said he desired to make it clear that the Christinas box was paid in cash. Messrs E. R. Webb, Be.rry and G. Rutherford, wore appointed members of the executive, Mr (x. ,L. Rutherford was appointed in place of Mr T. Stevenson to represent the Cheviot County, and Mr .T. E. Pearson was appointed as the representative of tho Selwyn County Patriotic Committee. The Kaiapoi Patriotic Committee offered to amalgamate with the Canterbury Committee, provided' proper representation were secured on the executive. The offer was accepted, and Mr •!. H. Blackwcll. Mayor of Kaiapoi, was appointed the representative of the 1 Kaiapoi Patriotic Committee. | The Quartermaster-General advised that if a married man refused to make an allotment in favour of his destitute family he was discharged from the j'oree-s. The Auckland Patriotic Association advised that it was proposed to call a conference of representatives of Patriotic Associations to consider the matter of adopting uniformity of practice in the granting of relief. Tho chairman and vice-chairman were aprointed to represent the Canterbury Committee at the conference. The Minister of. Internal Affairs offered to call another conference. • It was decided to reply that, arrangements wen; already being made for the holding of a conference. , The matter of incorporating the ■ committee under the War Funds Act was referred to a special committee.
