AUCTIONS. -B. AIATSON AND CO. TO FAT CATTLE VENDORS AND PURCHASERS. CATTLE INSURANCE. S you arc weil aware. vc have conducted an Insurance Fund for our Customers, which insurance is ie<iui~itc to tho small traders, so tha: -their shoop run no risk in tho condemnation of any boasts tlw-y may brty. During the yeAT wc controlled one-third of the sale of cattlo ;n Addington Yards. Under cur scheme we hove charged our customers 011 a lover basis for insurance than tho Cattlo Insurance Fund has don/*, and we promptly • paid out all claims. The Cattle Insurance Fund ha?, wo understand, gone into liquidation. We have received requests from over 10 butchers who kill at tho Abattoirs out of about a pcssible GO, and over 30 graziers, who have sold fat cattlo during the past year ;it Addington, asking us to continue our Fund, and promising their whole-hearted support if we will do so. We offered to take over the Insurance for the whole of tlic Addington Yards, and manage it for one or two years on tho same conditions that we have run out- own Fund. In opposition to us, the other agents and a few butchers have apparently requested the Canterbury SaJeyards Company to take over the Insurance. This they have agreed to do. but while they intend to cany on the Insurance Scheme, they have determined to put an end to our Fund. A letter, of which the following is a copy, was sent to us on tho GOtli December, 1915 : — The Canterbury Salcyards Company, Hereford street, Christ church, Slat December, 1915. Messrs EL ilatson and Co., Christchurcb, INSURANCE OF FAT CATTLE. Dear Sire,— Tho Directors liavo decided that from tho lot January, IDIG, tho below-mentioned rule] shall operate at Addington Yards: — "All vendors of fat cattle passed for Insurance at Addington Yards shall contribute half the fec3 in fore© from time to time for the Insurance of Fat Cattle, and all purchasers of such cattle shall contribute the other half, except in case 3 where tho vendor guarantees such cattle, in which ease insurance is not required." Tlio Company will, from tho Ist January, continue tho Insurance Fund under its own management, in lieu of tho Cattlo Insurance Fund, which has decided to discontinue operation, and a scale of fees has been drawn up at a reduccd rate of Gd per head less than tho Cattle Fund rates hitherto in force-. Tho Company does not intend to establish an Insurance Fund for profit, but merely to pay tho cost of claims, wages, and expenees of operating the business. lAM INSTRUCTED TO ADVISE YOU THAT THE COMPANY WILL NOT PERMIT ANY OTHER CATTLE INSURANCE TO OPERATE IN COMPETITION WITH ITS FUND AT ADDINGTON YARDS. The Company asks stock agents to collect tho fees as hitherto, leas a commission of 5 per oent. Schedule of fees will bo forwarded to you before next Wednesday. This course has been decided upon at tho urgent request of tho MAJORITY OF THE STOCK AGENTS, THE MSRfT.tt. BUTCHERS' ASSOCIATION, AND THE EXECUTIVE OF THE CATTLE INSURANCE fund; Your» faithfully. ARNAUD McKELLAR, Secretary. ' In our opinion tho new Fund will not bo run as economically as we ran our Fund for our customers. That, however, is a matter for tho Company to consider, and wo do not wish to interfere with their business, but wo feel that a great injustice is being done to our, customers, and to ourselves, by arbitrarily stopping us from carrying on our Fund. However, the Saleyards Company are 1 4 1 determined to monopolise tlio Insurance. Wo have to thank our customers for tho support which they have accorded to ourXnsuranee Fund in the past, and for tlio interest they have taken in the- same by asking us to continue it. and offering their support in tho future. We are sorry, however, that owing to the attitude that the Saleyards Company have adopted we cannot, as requested by our cust-omens, carry on our Insurance Schemo. Under the circumstance*, we hare to reluctantly close our Insurance Fund, which we feel was started and carried on by us for the benefit of the operators in tho cattle market. H. MATS OX and CO.
