MINOR SUCCESSES.

An official communique says:— "A German offensive south of Lake Sventen broke down in face of our heavy rifle-fire. "Our artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Germans nt Somka on the left bank of the Styr. The enemy lied in d border. "We dispersed large Austrian forces 'south of Novo Aloxinotz." The High Commissioner reports:— j LONDON. December sth (7.5 p.m.). I I'etrograd reports that during a German attack on Podcherivitchi, on the left bank of the Styr, the Russians at first, retreated, and tjion rc-took the station. At the village of »Semka, on the loft bank of the. Styr, the enemy were dispersed by artillery lire. An enemy offensive afc Berkost was repulsed. REPORTED SUCCESS NEAR TURK I'M. (Received December sth, 11.5 p.m.) GENE\ A, December 5. Reports from lladom state that the Russians carried twenty kilometres of trenchers on the Tukkum road, capturing 700 prisoners and great stores of munitions and victuals for hundreds of horses. GERMAN SOLDIERS INFERIOR RUSSIANS CONTENT TO WAIT. ("Times" ?na "Sydney Sun" Sorvicea.) LONDON, December 3. . A message from Petrograd states that. Russian generals report that the quality of the enemy V? effectives is now most inferior, "and that the maintenance of his- position is solely due to his technical supcriortt\. There is no doubt that the Russians could break the enemy's line, subject to the weather conditions, but the present not the time for a general offensive.
