AUSTRALIA AND THE WAR.

TO THE EDITOR OF "THE TRESS." Sir, —One cannot help feeling amused nt the remarks of that Wellington man which appeared in "The Press" of the 2nd instant under the heading, "Not Thinking About It," bearing upon Australian attitude towards the Avar. How "The Press" could give nrominence to such vic-WR is hard to understand—they presumably arc pushed for' matter to fill their columns. "New Zcalandev" certainly hits the nail on the head when he writes: "Hero young men and mid-dle-aged men everywhere say, 'Wo may all havo to go yet, and wo will go if they want us.' " ITow perfectly true, and it certainly explains "why the 10tU and 11th Reinforcements have not filled.' it being the attitude of the "young men and middle-aged men" referred to as such, heroes. One wonders how our "friend" could join in the gaiety, which he admits ho did. Even went to the Melbourne Cup—l trust his "wowser" friends in New Zealand do not hear of it—and -witnessed the youna "bloods" fighting to get their bobs on tho "good things" with the "bookies." How many meetings in New Zealand pineo the war began show a decrcaso of totalisator figures? He doesn't touch on patriotic funds, and "wisely, too. Even tho school-child-ren have contributed tens of thousands of pounds to tho funds which certainly contradicts his opening statement, "They don't seein to be thinking about that at all."

Lastly, wlicn tlio war, is over. New Zealandors as a, whole will thank their lucky stars that there was an Australian Navy, and, Although at all times comparisons aro odious, especially at times like this, "Tho Press" should think twico before publishing «uch damning views.—Yours, etc.,. AX AUSTRALIAN.
