THE COMING CARNIVAL.

TO 11IK EDITOR OV |; TIT>; I'EESS. ' .Sir,—l see that by most of the sections in the AYholesale and Retail Cominittoo. tho resolution affirming tho proposal that I'unds aro to be collected by direct contribution only lias been carried. Now. Sir, wo all know that to make our Queen Carnival a success financially we must create enthusiasm among the general public and obtain sufficient excitement in the Carnival. Direct giving will not do ihi-s, and if any section is really desirous of placing"their Queen at the top of the poll they must- use their brains against other sections and bring iu competition. Most people like something for their money, even if it is only a chance, such as an art union. I feel certain that unless wo'havo concerts. garden parties, side-shows, otc., our lulids will conio below that of any other large province. Ido not advocate sonic of the methods adopted in Auckland, but 1 do think if we wish for success wo must stir up the public and mako the city gay with our labours. From what I hear and sec, the movement at present i-s not being taken up with any '•vim." and meetings of tho different, trades are poorly attended. This is no doubt owing to tho decision of direct contribution. It seems to 1110 that those interested prefer this method of raisins funds so as to save work. I am afraid we have "shirkers" in this movement, as well as among lighting men.—Yours, etc.. WORKER. December 3rd, 1915.
