CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS. Tho Board of Governors of Canterbury College mot yesterday, when there were present:—Mr J. C. Adams (chairman). Dean Hills, Dean Harper, and Messrs G. Rennie; C. • H. Opie, H. Boyd, \V. Brock, T. Hughes, T. H. Davcy, b. Hurst Seager, W. H. Montgomery, and T. W. Adams. A letter was received from Mr J. W. Joynt, London, stating that the resolution from the Board expressing sympathy with tho authorities of Louvain Cniversity was being retained by him in the meantime, but would be handed on to tho authorities at the earliest opportunity. A letter was received, .from Professor Stewart suggesting that his locum tanens, Mr H. Broadhead, might be retained in the meantime, as it was quit« uncertain how long the war would last. Professor Stewart added that he had been hit by bullets five times, and by bits of. bombs four times, and had been bitten once. Ho had secured hi 6 captaincy, and hoped to attain his majority shortly. The chairman stated that the arrangement with Professor Stewart was intended to operate until the end of the war. The Museum and Library Committee recommended that the resignation of Mr A. Plowman of his position as professor's demonstrator in tho School of Engineering be accepted as from January 31st, on account of his having received an appointment at tho Broken Hill Technical School, and that Mr P. G. Bamford be appointed to the position, as from February Ist, 1916, at a salary at the rate of £250 per annum. The "committee reported thnt the second vear enjjineering exhibition was awarded to Marcelius James Scott; Mr I>. B. Copeland had resigned his position as teacher of English and arithmetic at tho School, of Art: the Public Library would he closed on Anniversary T>ay, December 10th. on the occasion of the River Bank Patriotic Carnival. The report was adopted. The College Committee reported having considered the following report of the High Schools' Visiting Sub-Com-mittee:—'The High Schools' visiting sub-committee hoc; to report that after careful considci ation of the memoranda of the headmaster and the lady principal, they recommend that the preparatory departments in the schools bo continued, provided that the payment of salaries for tuition does not contravene the Education Act; and that a master for the preparatory department at the Boys' High School be advertised for at a salary, consisting of tho fees of the pupils, secretarial allowance (£*2o), and supervision at the hostel (£3O), and that tho mistress of the preparatory department at the Girls' High School rwnain in *tatn quo." And, in connexion with the same, having passed the following motion :—"That tho subsidising of a teacher'!- salary for the preparatory deoartment of the Boys' -High School, bcins a contravention of the Education Act. the rcommendaHon of the High Schools' Visiting Sub-Com-mittee, be not agreed to.'' The report was considered in committee, and was adopted »by seven votes to six.
