The lliccartou Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Brown). Crs. A. I>. Ford, n -: n «s A 10 Steere. H. Gudsell. H. Wis?,'(r. W. .T. Parsons, A. Hampton, and W. Dalley. The Canterbury A. and P. Association wrote, asking the Council to- take steps to prevent tho erection of stands fcr selling fruit on the roadway outside the gates of the Show Grounds on Show days.—Referred to • the By-laws Committee with power to net. The Under-Secretary for" Public Works wrote, stating that with reference to the warrant of the Governor apportioning the cost ot maintaining North and Middle Park roads, through Haclev Park, ho was directed by the Public Work-. Department, to sav that, owing to a misunderstanding, it. had decided that the case should be reheard, and Mr W. S. Short had been appointed to rehear it. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act, and it was decided to urge tho City Council to unit© with thq Kiccarton Council in forwarding a protest to the Department against its action. A deputation waited on the Council with a petition for the widening of Clarence road to a three-quarter chain road. The petition was signed by twelve householders, who agreed to give free a strip of land Bft 3in wide along the whole frontage, provided tho Council re-erected the fences.

After somo discussion the matter was ■ postponed for consideration till the next meeting. The Finance Committee reported that tho receipts for the fortnight amounted to £230 3s 4d. and tho expenditure to £335 15s od. The district fund-account showed a credit balance of £->>G 17r 3d, the No. 9 loan account a. credit balancp of £I*2 ]3s Id. and the No. 10_ Joan account a credit balance of £154 ~s Bd. The report was adopted. Dalley then put forward tho suggestion. that Riccarton, tendalton. and Spreydon should unite with the city in tlie matter of fire prevention, which, lioaevtr, was left in abeyance. A discussion regarding the Domain and improvements thereto loci to tho passing" of the following resolution:— "Seeing that the Christchurch Domain Board have power to raise, and aro raising, revenue by ratine Christchurch and the surrounding districts, this Council is of the opinion that.the leasing of the Park for sheer* crazing should cease, and that 'tho Domain Board he asked not to re-lcasc it for such purposes in the future." Stokes, secretary of the Fire Brigade, renewed his application that tho Council should permit one of its employees to assist the brigade in cleaning up the after a fire. It was decided to inform Mr I>ud!ey Hill that a culvert would be fixed in Park road at the usual eliurge. A petition nas presented from ratepayers in the north of tho. Borough, nsking that the wind screen of wire and broom, at present being erected at the junction of the Esplanade and Bpwhill road, be continued to tho northern boundary of the Borough.—Referred to the committee for consideration and report. An application for permis-ion to bring an old building from Bexlcy and re-erect it in the Borough was refused. The treasurer's report was as follows: Receipts £&U 9sexpenditure £70 17s 2d: Lank balance, dr. £330 lis lid; deoosits, dr., £1800 0s (id: building permits granted during the past fortnight were valued at £316, making a total of 42 permits granted to date, with an aggregate value of £5646.-— Adopted. Cr. Christian'a motion to restrict the valu** of buildings in certain areas in the Borough was lost. Cr. Ainger gave notice to move at next meeting:—"That the motion standing on the books appointing the whole Council a-s a committee, be rescind ed; that two committees be appointed: (1) Works. Sanitation and Lighting; (2) Finance. Bj-laws, Fire

Brigade, and Reserves; No. 1 Committee to consist of five councillors, three to form a quorum ; and No. 2 to consist of four councillors."
