MEETINGS AND SOCIALS.
SUMNER BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION. A meeting; of the Sv.mncr Burgee ?<*' Association was held in tho Town Hall on Saturday evening, whoa Mr J, H. Maynard presided over a good attendance. A letter was received from tho Borough Council welcoming the formation of the Association, and granting it the uso of a room for meetings. A letter was -received from the lUdcliffs Progressive Association asking tho .Burgeeacs' Association to state a basis for federation. A rubcommittee, consisting of Messrs J. H. Maynard, 11. M. Garrick, and T. B. Boulton, wa« apointed to wait on the Association and to report on the result to the next meeting. It was decided to express appreciation of the great improvements .in tho Sumner tramway service. It was agreed to tend a letter of appreciation to the members of tie Siimner Fire Brigade for their splendid service* in saving the adjoining bouses from destruction at tho recent fire. It was decided to l>ring before Ujo Borough Council the urgent necessity of providing more efficient firc-Sghting appliances in the borough. HORSE AND MOTOR DRIVERS' UNION. The members of 'be Christchurch Horse and Commercial Motor Drivers' Union hold a very successful «rooking concert and euchre party in the Manchester Chambers on Saturday night. Mr A. J. Cooper, president of tho union, was in the chair, and thero were ck;o cn two hundred present Tbe toae's honoured included "The King, ''Our Boys at the Front," "The VifiWxre," "Tho President," and "The Union." MY tl. Crew, in proposing "Our Boys at the Front," mentioned that ecven members of the union were at the front, t'-vo baring died—ono at Trentham and the other killed in action. Several rr.oml>ers were at present in camp, and he was glod to oee two of them present. Private T. Whiteside responded. During thp evening songs were given by Mee*r» T. Miller. Erickson. Whiteside, J. Ait-cbeeon. B. Johnson, axiA .1. Sheohan. Mr R. Wood played the accompaniments for the voca.'iste. The winners at the euchre tournament were:—H. N. Burns first. J. Aitchison second. J. Fabey third. The prizes consisted of pipes. The evening was most enjoyable, And the social committee, of which Mr B. Crew was chairman, dfeervo great credit for til© very complete arrangements made.
