TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL

The annual mooting of th<* Canterbury Trades and Labour Council was liold on > Saturday, the prcekiejit (Mr C. Ilenn) presiding. Now delegates from tho Furnituro Trades' Union wore accorded a hearty welcome. A letter was received from Mr H. Hunter, secretary of tho United Federation of Labour, intimating that it wad neccsaary to appoint Ciuitorbury'e representative on tlie National Executive. Mr F. Lurch was appointed to tho position. Tho report and bai&nee-shoet wero received. Tlie report atuted that the paat terra had shown a decided in tho ranks of Labour, that tho numerical strength of the Council had considerably increased, and that tho prospects of closer organisation wero very encouraging. Tho financial position was very satisfactory, there being a good balancc in hand. The Hall Management Committee's report stated that alterations and improvements had been made to the building, that a further £100 had been paid off tho mortgage, and that arrangements were being made to pay off tho whole of the mortgage he'.d by tho Government Life Department by the issue of debentures to tlte local unions, thus making tho unions and unionists tho exclusive owners of tho property. Roascr, and S. King. The chairman reported upon tho work done by tho committeo which was eet up to encourage the formation of a New Board of Trade- and Industries. It was decided to tako no further action- in connexion with tho matter. It was resolved: "That in view of the heavy burden tilaced upon tho shoulders of tho workers by tho increasing cost of living, wo urge tho City Council to immediately establish a municipal market."
