A GERMAN SEEKS INTERNMENT.

On Saturday night a brick was sent crashing through ono of the, plate-glass windows of the shop of Fowlds Ltd., in Queen street, and the man who threw the brick made no attempt to run away, with the result that be was immediately arrested by the first constable who arrived on tbe sceno. The man, who gay© his name as George Pongart, aged 39 years, stated that ho was a German by birth, and had not been naturalised m New Zealand. When charged before Mr E. C. Cntten, 6.M., this morning, with having done damage to tho value of £16. he said he had been about a fortnight in Auckland and had been drinking. Sub-Inspector Mcllveney: He was sober when he was arrested. His Worehip: You will be better away from the drink for twenty-one days. The prisoner here broke in with a request to be sent to Somes Island, where German prisoners wero interned. "Evorybody seems to be down on mc just because the war is on, and won't give mc employment. I hay© been to tho King Country and I was in Palmerston North, where I could not get a job. so I asked the police there to put m© on the island, but they would not do it. I would bo very much obliged if yon would put mc there." His Worship stated that the Court had no power to intern prisoners in that way, but he would be sentenced to twenty-one days' imprisonment with hard labour, and after he got out ha had better go and see tho Defence Department about being interned.
