THE REINFORCEMENTS.
STEADY RECRUITING
■The following men volunteered irt Christclvurch on Saturday:— J. A. Mercer, C. Montgomery, A. J. Boak.i, F. A. Jones, X. C. Burns, J. A. Rankin, F. G. Pu c h. A. Wood, A. J. Kidd, "W. H. J. Simpson, T. Hallidny (Infantry), G. Kirk. F. Hadaway, G. It. S. Ileid, F. C. Harrow (Mounted), H. H. H. Brooks, S. C. McConnell, F. Williamson, A. OUirer (A.5.0.)1 K. Mills, S.. Slocombo, A. Johnson (Artillery), and E. A. Blakesley (Ambulance).
Twenty-four recruits signed on ai tho Citizens' I>efence Corps Bureau, Horeford etreet, on Saturday. A number of enquiries per post wore dealt with, and some men were assisted in arranging their private affairs. Tho chief difficulty tho Buroau is conlfcmted with at the present time is that of medical examination. Tho official examinations are only held once a week, which, is very inconvenient for country . applicants particularly. These nien naturally cannot afford to riak losing their jobs whon there is a risk about passing tho medical examination. It ia felt that examinations should be held more frequently, to enable men. from outside the city to register and bo examined on the one day, co that before ther return thej- will know definitely whether they aro accepted or not. It is aleo considered that some arrange--' menfc might be made with the medical practitioners in tho various country towns whereby applicants might bo medically examined in their own locality. Tho executive of the Citizen* , Defence Corps proposo to see Mr Alien, on his arrival from tho south to-day, to diecuss with him various matters relating .to recruiting. Those in charge of the Citizens' !>efence Corps' recruiting station at 152 Hereford street, would be ' very glad, to get offers of assistance from followmombers of tbe C.D.C. Tho great idea i e to keep th 0 office open all day and, evory day, and it is thought that out of tho 1500 or so men on tho roll of the C.D.C., it will not be difficult to get a score or so of volunteers who will undertake th<> doty of minding tho office for a few hours each day. Many men lwve repeatedly expressed a desire to help, and liero is an outlet for their enthusiasm.
