MONTHLY MEETING,
The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers* Association waa hold on baturday evening, Mr W. Wray presiding over a good attendance of members. Tho eocretary of the New Zealand Fnutgrowere . Federation wrote forwarding forms of a petition to the Rt. Hon. W. F. MaeSey, Minister of Agriculture, asking for the regietration of all growers of fruit for sale or export in accordance with the wishes expressed at the conference of the Fruitgrowera' Federation. It was unanimously resolved, alter considerable discussion, that etepe be to secure eignaturee to the petition and forward it to the Minister. The secretary of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation also wrote requesting information as to what quantity of fruit the various members would be holding by the end of Juno next. At about that period the duty will be relaxed, and the Federation executive proposed, providing a fair amount of New Zealand fruit was etfll unsold, to appToach the Government, asking it to retain ,the duty in' order that Taemanian fruit I would compete more evenly with New Zealand fruit, and co give the New Zealand grower a better price for hie product. Mr Longton said that 400,000 casee of Taemanian fruit had been shut out, and would lateT be placed on the New Zealand market. Buyers, who'usually .bought at present, were not now operating" in New , Zealand fruit. He urged that the duty ehould Be enforced throughout the year, and not removed temporarily, as usual during the winter, to the detriment of New Zealand growers. . , Other members epoke in favour of the euafgention, and it was Teeolved to supply tire information asked for. An interesting addreaa was given by Mr W. J. Courtier on oil eprays, the epeaker detailing the advantages of the various oik for dealing with the many pests with which the orchardiet has to contend.
