MEETING AT HILTON. .. Ac a well-attended meeting held at Hilton, a few miles from Geraldine, tJio chair was taken by Mr W. Suinnierneid. who spoke of the great sacrifice made by the Belgians and the sore distress they were mw suffering. He said the? present was an opportune time for country districts to make a special effort to give .some relief to these people. A discussion ensued as to the distribution of the funds, and the chairman having expressed confidence that a satisfactory way of securing relief to those who needed it would be found, it was resolved to open a subscription list, appoint a committee, and arrange for a canvass. Mr Snmmerficld was elected chairman, Mr D. Lewis treasurer, Mr J. Coughlan secretary, artd Messrs M. Charles Verrall,' Fletcher. A. Wilkinson, Sharp, and Paterson mem hers of the committee. The sum of £54 16s' was raised in the room. At the Brookdale sale on Friday a sheep dog was offered by Mr McGrath, of Parnassus, the proceeds to be given to the Belgium Relief Fund. After being offered several times,, the amount realised v.-as £3 10s. At the Scargill sale yesterday £o los was realised for a fat lamb given by Mr James Gibb to the Belgium Fund, and rold by Messrs Pyne and Co. "We were stirred as we read . that appeal on behalf of the p<oor Belgians. We were already contributors, but felt we would like to do something more. After some consideration our quartette decided to work three and a-half hours overtime per week and thus provide £1 Is regularly towards that £75,000." At a meeting of the Waipara County Council held at Waikari on Wednesday night, it was decided to canvass the district for donations towards ths Belgium Harvest Festival, the canvassers to report at a meeting to be held in a fortnight's time, when :t trill be decided if the county shall iave a stall, at the festival. The mem-' bers were each elected as a committee in their ridings, with power to add two persons in each riding to assist them in the collection. The employees of Duckworth, Turner and Co., Ltd., held a meeting at the factory on Wednesday afternoon, when the following resolution, proposed by Mr L. Hart and seconded by Mr J. Wills, was unanimously carried: — "That this meeting of employees agree to make a -weekly donation to -the fund in aid of the Belgians of a sum equal to. 1J per cent, of the wages earned, until such time as peace is declared."
