A White Book published at Cape Town discloses that the motives for the. rebellion were; factious hatred of tho Botha Government., raoialkt republican ideals, and the personal ambition of Beyers, Maritz, and others.
Two abortive attempts were made before the actual rebellion broke out. The rebels intended to march to Pretoria and hoist ttie Republican flag, and release l and arm two thousand interned Germans.
It has been proved that Merits was communicating with German agents as early' ac «July, 1912> Dβ Wet's secretary- visited the. rebels' camp-fires §very'night, and.imparted the latest European.'news.
