On official statement wiys: "The Russian offensive on the Niemen and Vistula continue*. There has been a successful advance south-west of Gradno. The Germans are resisting stubbornly.

A furious all-doy battle in the Carpathians between the Ondawa and the San culminated in hand-to-hand fightr ing, and enormous Austrian losses. "Slany detachments were annihilated, and the stones of the mountains and the ravines were strewn with Austrian dead. "Tho Austrians defending the passago oi the Lomnitza suffered a £»erious reverse.
