OFFENSIVE CONTINUES.

FURIOUS FIGHTING IN THB

CARPATHIANS.

PETROGRAD, March 3

On official statement wiys: "The Russian offensive on the Niemen and Vistula continue*. There has been a successful advance south-west of Gradno. The Germans are resisting stubbornly.

A furious all-doy battle in the Carpathians between the Ondawa and the San culminated in hand-to-hand fightr ing, and enormous Austrian losses. "Slany detachments were annihilated, and the stones of the mountains and the ravines were strewn with Austrian dead. "Tho Austrians defending the passago oi the Lomnitza suffered a £»erious reverse. Our troops crossed the rh-er, occupied tho village of Krasna, and captured 6000 men, 64 officers, four guns, seven machine-guns, and much transport."

The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, March 4 (2.20 a.m.). Petroizrad reports that several attempts were made to approach the fortress of Osowifitz, but were repulsed. In the north the Russian advance contin Ues.

In the" Carpathians tctween tho Ondawa and the San furious Austrian attacks were repulsed completely. German attacks in the region of Kosziowa and Badanka were equally fruitless. At tho latter point two German companies were surrounded and aunihilated.

The Lomnitza rises in the Carpathians in bastoru Galicia. and flows north to .loin the Dniester. Kosziowa and Kadanka are between these two battle rronte.j
