CITY STREETS AND ROADS.

AUCKLAND EXPERT'S OPINIONS

Attending the Methodist Conference in Ohristchurch is .in expert in street and road construction, Mr James Tyler, superintendent of works for the Auckland City Council.

Mr Tyler informed a representative of "Tho Press" yesterday that during his visit to Christchurcb. he had been piloted over tho city and snburbsbyMr A. Dobson, city engineer, and had been able to form an opinion of the construction and condition of the streets and roadways. He was wonderfully impressed with the success of tarred macadam and water-bound macadam for streets and roads about the city. There was not the concentrated traffic hero that there wa s in tho northern centres, which were seaport towns, and because of this traffic, v more solid and expensive roadway pavement had to be gone in for in tho north, such as neuchatel asphalt or wood blocks. For the class of traffic he bad observed in Chrietchurch. and for residential streets, there was noj. the slightest doubt that the right thing had been adopted, and it was in splendid condition. Excellent results were being; obtained from tarred macadam everywhere he had seen it put down, and he- understood that tho cost was very reasonable. Hβ was surprised that tarred macadam and tar-painting had uot been extended to roads further from the ciiy's centre. Mr Tyler further remarked tbut he had not the slightest doubt but tbat tar would be more extensively used for road making in the future throughout the world, particularly for light traffic and residential roade. The great ad■rantage of tar Ted macadam and tarpainting was that dust was reduced to the TOimmmn, and again, the road was capped '"nth a more impervious surface, its life was prolonged with added comfort to the isers.

Comparing the four centres, Mr Tyler eaid that in each the physical conditions differed, but there *vas not the slishteet doubt in his mind that Christchureh roads and streets were Tory clean.
